About The Position

The Seasonal Visual Resource Inventory Technician will report to the Visual Resource Senior Manager and work with a core team of agency, ATC staff, and trained volunteers to complete a detailed visual resource inventory of all A.T. viewpoints in New Hampshire. This work will require hiking to designated viewpoints and collecting data using the National Park Service Enjoy the View protocol. Fieldwork trips may require multi-day backpacking and camping. The Visual Resource Inventory process is used to identify scenic quality and importance for views within and extending beyond the Appalachian Trail (A.T).

Requirements

  • Demonstrated ability of exceptional attention to detail and ability to follow protocols and workflows.
  • Familiarity and experience using GPS technology and ESRI software desired.
  • Commitment to ATC management and resource protection efforts.
  • Proven ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Experience working independently and as a team member.
  • Effectively communicate with individuals, groups, and partners.
  • Ability to live independently and work in a remote area with minimal supervision.
  • Training or education and/or experience in any of the following: conservation, resource management, recreation, environment.
  • Experience in collaborating with volunteers of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels.
  • Leave No Trace awareness
  • Must be able to hike for extended periods and perform routine moderate lifting carrying up to 35 pounds in a backpack over a minimum of five miles through rough, uneven terrain, and wet, and slippery surfaces.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, and access to a reliable personal vehicle.

Nice To Haves

  • Basic knowledge of Appalachian Trail Conservancy’s cooperative management system preferred.
  • Current Wilderness First-Aid, or higher, and CPR certification is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Upload, organize and perform quality checks on data.
  • Work in a close partnership team with the other Visual Resource Inventory Technicians, the Visual Resource Inventory Project Manager and volunteers.
  • Adhere to data recording protocols.
  • Perform fieldwork cataloguing the A.T. views and vistas in New Hampshire.
  • Regularly use technology including a GPS, mirrorless camera with manual functions, ArcGIS software, scanner and computer.
  • Assure the quality and organization of detailed monitoring data.
  • Travel to and from work sites, camping at or near work sites as appropriate. (Some gear may be provided as needed)
  • Organize, inventory, and maintain tools, supplies and equipment.
  • Assist with volunteer training and instruction.
  • Collaborate with ATC staff, volunteer clubs, and partner organizations in project planning, development, and reporting.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Visual Resource Senior Manager.
