About The Position

This summer seasonal position employees will perform varied manual labor work in the parks, trails, recreational facilities, and buildings of Marathon County and City of Wausau parks. Work duties are based on the needs of the department and generally fall into groundskeeping, maintenance, event support and custodial services. Direction and oversight will be provided by operations managers with tasks being performed independently or under the supervision of full-time employees. Some positions will be required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays. The Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department will begin filling positions in April with most start dates following in late May and June. Positions will end in August up to mid-October depending upon availability of seasonal employees and the needs of the department. Hours will vary based on candidate availability, department needs, and weather. Evening and Weekend availability preferred

Requirements

  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Valid driver’s license and a driving history that meets County standards.
  • Knowledge of building and grounds maintenance activities and processes preferred.
  • Relevant vocational training or prior experience in a specific trade can be beneficial.
  • Previous experience with vehicles and equipment such as half-ton and 3/4 ton trucks, ball diamond groomer, zero turn mower, preferred.
  • Skill in or ability to learn to operate vehicles and equipment effectively, safely, and efficiently preferred. Examples include half-ton and 3/4 ton trucks, ball diamond groomer, zero turn mower, etc.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Skill in keeping timely, accurate records related to work requests, destruction and loss forms, public incident forms, etc.
  • Ability to follow safety rules.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team.
  • Ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions (sun, heat, humidity, rain, cold).
  • Ability to effectively communicate with park users, coworkers, and supervisor.
  • Ability to contribute to a positive work culture that fosters excellent customer service and teamwork.

Responsibilities

  • Assists the public in a friendly and professional manner.
  • May perform a variety of manual work including cleaning facilities and grounds, painting, landscaping, construction/plumbing assistance, etc.
  • Open and close facilities according to established policies.
  • May assist with setting up and tearing down facilities for special events or rental groups.
  • May work independently or under the guidance of full-time employees in repair and maintenance work.
  • May perform groundskeeping: mowing, landscaping, plant and flower care, tree care, planting and weed removal, and sports field maintenance.
  • May perform maintenance of: pools, playgrounds, ball diamonds, facilities or conduct minor repairs and painting.
  • May operate power equipment of various sizes in City and County parks and facilities. Equipment includes items such as: zero turn mower, push mower, pool vacuum, table saw, drill, string trimmers etc.
  • May drag, groom, or otherwise assist with maintaining ball diamonds, sports fields, playgrounds, etc.
  • May perform semi-skilled trade tech assistance including light construction such as building wooden shelters, roofs, kiosks, press boxes and provides plumbing assistance.
  • May provide custodial services, general cleaning and trash removal at facilities, parks ground, pools and grounds; cleaning agents and other chemicals may be used in performing these tasks.
  • Performs other related work as required.
