Requirements

  • Two (2) years of heavy equipment operation experience (for Equipment Operator I).
  • Three (3) years of heavy equipment operations, maintenance, or construction experience (for Equipment Operator II).
  • Valid Class “B” Commercial Driver's License with airbrakes and Tanker (N) endorsement at time of application (for Equipment Operator I).
  • Valid Class “A” Commercial Driver's License with airbrakes and Tanker (N) endorsement at time of application (for Equipment Operator II).
  • Must obtain valid Class “A” State of Alaska Commercial Driver's License with airbrakes and Tanker (N) endorsement within one (1) year of appointment (for Equipment Operator I).
  • Must obtain valid Class “A” State of Alaska Commercial Driver's License with airbrakes and Tanker (N) endorsement by time of appointment if selected (for Equipment Operator II).
  • Demonstrated proficiency on a motor grader regardless of conditions or ability to achieve proficiency within three (3) months of appointment and for continued employment (for Equipment Operator II).
  • Applicants must supply a recent driving record issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles in the applicant’s state of residence.
  • Must register with the FMCSA Clearinghouse and provide CBJ with paper and electronic consent for a full query of the driver’s Clearinghouse record.
  • Must be prepared to undergo pre-employment testing for controlled substances and a 3-year drug & alcohol testing background check.

  • Preferred experience includes: operating heavy and light motorized equipment including front-end loaders, backhoes, and dump trucks in hauling biosolid materials, the construction and/or maintenance of streets, roadways, utilities, airport runways, airport taxiways, airport ramps, and/or airport aprons, using hand and power tools, performing minor servicing of equipment and applying safety procedures.
  • Completion of a CBJ equipment operation-training program may substitute for one year of specialized experience (for Equipment Operator II).
  • Certification of completion of training from other agencies will be considered for equivalency as a substitute for the CBJ training program (for Equipment Operator II).
  • Certification as an ATSSA Flagger (or equivalent) within 6 months of appointment and for continued employment.
  • Attendance at and certification (as available) in CPR, First Aid, and Confined Space Entrant and/or attendant within 18 months of appointment.

Responsibilities

  • Operate snow removal equipment, including trucks with plows and/or sanders, motor graders, loaders, and rotary snow blowers.
  • Perform seasonal maintenance of CBJ streets during winter months.
  • Conduct snow and ice control operations using heavy and light-duty equipment for plowing, salting, and sanding.
  • Maintain and repair gravel roads to ensure continued accessibility.
  • Address and repair potholes and other asphalt issues.
  • Respond to off-hour requests for emergencies and weather-related events.
  • Work outdoors in cold and/or wet weather conditions.
  • Perform physically demanding tasks including heavy lifting and requiring physical endurance.
