About The Position

The Game & Parks Commission's Fish and Wildlife Education Division is seeking one Seasonal Educator for a 6-month time frame. This position will primarily focus on community science initiatives, while also supporting various other education programs. The role offers hands-on training, opportunities for professional growth in environmental education and outdoor recreation, the chance to share a love of nature and science with diverse communities, and professional networking opportunities in the conservation career field.

Requirements

  • At least six months of experience working in a recreational area, scenic attraction, hospitality, historical, retail or customer service setting, agricultural setting, or related coursework/training.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Knowledge of Nebraska plant and wildlife species, community science initiatives, natural resources, and outdoor recreation activities like kayaking.
  • Knowledge of basic science and ecological principles.
  • Knowledge of animal care.
  • Knowledge of safe work procedures.
  • Knowledge of group management.
  • Knowledge of best educational practices and communication principles.
  • Skills in educating people of all levels and interests.
  • Skills in communicating clearly with people from a variety of backgrounds through varied platforms both in person and online.
  • Skills in entry-level outdoor recreation practices.
  • Ability to communicate and effectively educate the public.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions.
  • Ability to work independently and make decisions independently.
  • Ability to direct volunteers.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and administrative personnel.
  • Ability to recognize safety hazards and take steps to correct the situation.
  • Ability to apply agency policies pertinent to assigned work and direction of assigned crews.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, climb, lift and carry up to 40 lbs., reach frequently.
  • Ability to work outdoors.
  • Ability to remain standing and/or walking for long periods of time.

Nice To Haves

  • Administration of first aid and CPR preferred.
  • Bilingual preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Supporting the Community Science Program Manager with related projects, including program promotion, resource creation, and conducting field work related to pollinators and mammals.
  • Leading educational programming at schools, community centers, and special events focused on community science, outdoor recreation, and Nebraska's natural resources.
  • Caring for and educating with animals, including snakes, turtles, and frogs.
  • Coordinating volunteers for large events.
  • Organizing activities.
  • Growing existing education programs.
  • Other duties as assigned.
