The Seasonal Code Compliance Officer is responsible for inspecting properties, identifying violations related to overgrown grass and weeds, documenting cases, educating property owners and occupants, and assisting with enforcement of City ordinances and nuisance abatement procedures. This position is ideal for someone who is observant, organized, self-motivated, and comfortable working independently in the field while providing professional customer service.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the public.
  • Ability to manage multiple cases.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Valid Kansas driver's license.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts inspections of residential, commercial, and vacant properties throughout the City to identify violations involving overgrown grass, weeds, and related nuisance vegetation.
  • Responds to citizen complaints and proactively patrols assigned areas to locate potential violations.
  • Documents property conditions through written notes, photographs, measurements or visual observations, and electronic records.
  • Posts notices, prepares violation letters, and communicates compliance deadlines to property owners, tenants, or other responsible parties.
  • Conducts re-inspections to verify compliance and determine whether additional enforcement action is necessary.
  • Assists with issuing warnings, notices of violation, citations, or abatement referrals in accordance with City ordinances, policies, and procedures.
  • Coordinates with supervisors, contractors, and other City staff regarding mowing abatements, repeat violations, and case follow-up.
  • Maintains accurate and organized case files suitable for administrative review, cost recovery, or court proceedings if necessary.
  • Explains ordinance requirements and compliance expectations to the public in a professional, courteous, and consistent manner.
  • Operates City vehicles, tablets, cameras, and other equipment used to perform inspections and maintain records.
  • Performs all other duties as deemed necessary or assigned.
