The Scrub Tech First Assist is primarily responsible for scrubbing or first assisting on surgical procedures in all specialties performed in the area of Surgical Services. The First Assist shall practice an expanded role of the Scrub Technician, and will function under the supervision and direction of the RN - First Assist and/or the operating Surgeon. When acting in the First Assist role, the individual will not concurrently function as the Scrub Tech. The First Assist shall provide quality patient care in a prompt and professional manner. This individual shall be responsible for setting up assigned cases, maintaining a sterile field, and counting appropriate items with circulating nurse used during surgical cases. This position requires an understanding of the principles of aseptic technique and sterilization, and can apply the knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology and operative technique relative to operative procedures. Additionally, this individual shall perform a variety of tasks such as care of instruments, supplies, sutures, needles and basic equipment, as well as stocking, cleaning, inventory, etc. This individual will also be responsible to communicate patient information to the Surgeon. The Surgical Tech First Assist must adhere to Baptist Health policies and procedures pertaining to duties and be able to fulfill verbal and written instructions, as well as adhere to all OSHA guidelines, safety and infection control policies. For those First Assists in the Physician Practice, they will be responsible to schedule all surgical and endoscopy cases for said Physician Practice. This position may have additional duties assigned that are within scope of the role.
