To protect the State Capitol, annexes, state properties, employees and the public by providing general security, screening and inspection of all visitors. This role involves inspecting visitors’ personal effects and equipment to identify weapons, contraband, explosives or other hazards, and preventing such items from entering the building. The Screener will tactfully and professionally explain screening protocols, operate basic security equipment like x-ray machines and hand-held wands, and perform pat-downs and wand searches. They will identify and report suspicious findings, set aside items for detailed searching, interpret and apply screening procedures, and pursue individuals who breach security, notifying Capitol Police immediately. The role also includes questioning suspicious visitors, preventing unauthorized entry into restricted areas, closing and reopening entry areas after security breaches, patrolling work areas and grounds, maintaining order at entry/exit checkpoints, contacting first responders, recording information and composing basic reports, watching for wanted persons, confiscating dangerous items, interacting courteously with the public, remaining on duty as ordered, following standard operating procedures, attending staff meetings, being available for unmanned shifts and reassignment, maintaining a professional presence, and administering CPR/first aid as required. Screening incoming mail is also part of the duties.
