About The Position

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) is seeking a dedicated and civic-minded individual to join its Security Services Department as a Special Conservator of the Peace (SCOP) Officer. This role is crucial for ensuring the safety and security of the museum, its employees, and visitors. The SCOP Officer will be responsible for patrolling museum property, enforcing rules and regulations, assisting visitors and staff, responding to emergencies, reporting hazards or suspicious activities, and supporting investigations. As an armed officer with general police powers, the SCOP Officer will also be involved in securing evidence and maintaining detailed records. This position requires flexibility to work varied shifts, including mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, and a potential six-month overnight rotation after training.

Requirements

• Understanding of laws, regulations, and standards governing the duties and conduct of sworn, armed Special Conservators of the Peace Officers.
• Understanding of accident and claims investigation methods.
• Ability to effectively address public safety and security concerns in a timely and appropriate manner.
• Capability of providing emergency care to individuals who are injured, ill, or otherwise in need of assistance while at the Museum.
• Proficiency in exercising independent judgment.
• Proficiency in preparing thorough and effective reports.
• Proficiency in communicating clearly in both written and oral formats.
• Ability to sit, stand, and patrol the campus for extended periods, up to twelve (12) hours.
• Comfortable working in a diverse environment.
• Skill at establishing and maintaining positive working relationships with colleagues and the public.
• Strong customer service skills.
• Familiarity with basic computer applications.
• Successful completion of a criminal background check.
• Successful completion of the entry level SCOP training and firearms courses.
• Successful completion of ninety-five (95) hours of field training.
• Acceptance and credentialing by the State Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) as an Armed Special Conservator of the Peace.
• Completion of an I-9 form and presentation of documentation of identity and eligibility to work in the United States.

• Formal education or equivalent experience in law enforcement, criminal justice, private security, or a related field, such as military service.
