About The Position

Zoetis Veterinary Medicine Research and Development’s Biologics Analytical Sciences group in Kalamazoo, Michigan, is seeking an analytical scientist at the Scientist level to support its growing biopharmaceutical portfolio. The role focuses on characterizing biological molecules, identifying degradation pathways, and defining critical quality attributes. It contributes to analytical method development, qualification, validation, and transfer, using techniques including HPLC, capillary electrophoresis, spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. The scientist works collaboratively with other scientists and interdisciplinary teams to develop advanced approaches for characterizing biopharmaceutical products, assays, and tools. The role also involves developing high-throughput or automated sample-preparation methods, addressing moderately complex problems, keeping current with scientific literature, and documenting and communicating findings through electronic laboratory notebooks, technical reports, and presentations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, or another related discipline, with industry experience: 4 or more years for a bachelor’s degree or 2 or more years for a master’s degree.
  • Excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills; motivated and self-starting.
  • Experience with separation technologies, including multiple modes of HPLC and capillary electrophoresis (e.g., SEC, RP-HPLC, IEX, icIEF, and CE-SDS) for complex protein analysis.
  • Experience developing and validating biopharmaceutical analytical methods, including UHPLC, electrophoretic separations, and glycoprotein analysis.
  • Ability to influence and collaborate with peers, develop and coach others, and guide colleagues’ work to achieve meaningful outcomes and business impact.
  • Ability to prepare comprehensive analytical reports and presentations for technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to process improvement.

Nice To Haves

  • More than 4 years of industry experience developing, validating, and transferring biopharmaceutical analytical methods.
  • Strong understanding of protein structure, post-translational modifications including glycans, and potential sequence liabilities such as oxidation, deamidation, and clipping.
  • Familiarity with biopharmaceutical manufacturing processes, including cell culture, purification, and formulation.
  • Proficiency with Empower and Chemstation chromatographic software.
  • Experience developing UHPLC, electrophoresis, and spectroscopy methods.
  • Skills and experience in experimental design, technical problem-solving, and continuous improvement.
  • Experience with and understanding of LC-MS analysis of biological products.
  • Experience with SDS-PAGE gel digestion for LC-MS protein identification.
  • Familiarity with plate-based assays such as ELISA.
  • Experience preferably in the animal health biopharmaceutical industry.

Responsibilities

  • Characterize biological molecules, identify degradation pathways, and define critical quality attributes.
  • Contribute to analytical method development, qualification, validation, and transfer activities.
  • Apply relevant new knowledge from scientific literature to project work.
  • Communicate complex concepts to interdisciplinary teams through oral and written presentations and reports.
  • Collaborate with scientists to advance techniques for characterizing biopharmaceutical products, assays, and tools.
  • Develop high-throughput and/or automated methodologies for sample preparation.
  • Develop creative solutions to moderately complex problems.
  • Document and communicate results in electronic laboratory notebooks, technical reports, and oral presentations.
