Scientist- Delivery Sciences-Lipid Chemistry

NewLimit•South San Francisco, CA
•$130,000 - $171,000

About The Position

NewLimit is seeking a Scientist in Delivery Sciences with a focus on lipid chemistry to design, formulate, and characterize targeted lipid nanoparticles (tLNPs) bearing antibody conjugates, nanobodies, and single-chain variable fragments (scFvs). The role will help build the company’s targeting LNP platform, particularly to deliver nucleic acid payloads to target cells and tissues beyond the liver. This is a hands-on bench role with ownership of targeting composition and reaction design. The Scientist will work closely with Delivery Sciences and biology teams to design and build a portfolio of relevant targeting lipids for NewLimit’s pipeline programs. Responsibilities include developing LNP compositions and conjugation chemistries, testing targeting lipids through SAR-based design cycles, and translating discovery data into structural hypotheses and optimized tLNP compositions or targeting molecules. The role also presents experimental results and SAR conclusions and authors protocols and technical reports.

Requirements

  • PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Biochemistry, or a related discipline, plus 1–2 years of relevant work; or an MS with 5 years of focused tLNP design experience for liposomal or lipid nanoparticle applications.
  • Strong hands-on skill in designing and formulating new targeted LNPs without a supervisor directing each step.
  • Experience with SAR-driven design, purification, and characterization of tLNPs and targeted-moiety-conjugated lipids, and with AI-based SAR prediction tools for tLNP applications.
  • Working knowledge of conjugation chemistries for attaching targeting moieties such as peptides, antibodies, nanobodies, and small-molecule ligands, including linker design and selection of suitable biorthogonal or site-specific handles.
  • Practical purification skills spanning normal- and reverse-phase chromatography, size-exclusion chromatography, and preparative HPLC.
  • Analytical characterization experience across LC-CAD, LC-UV, DLS, CE, bio-layer interferometry, and surface plasmon resonance, with the ability to interpret data to produce well-characterized tLNPs.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with novel conjugation chemistries and reaction methods.
  • Targeting-moiety optimization experience for immune cells and endothelial cells.
  • Exposure to scale-up process development, CMC, or tech transfer to a CDMO.
  • Experience with data visualization and statistical analysis using R, Python, or JMP.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop LNP compositions and conjugation chemistries for antibodies, nanobodies, scFvs, peptides, and other targeting moieties across multiple structural families, advancing extra-hepatic targeting materials.
  • Plan conjugation reactions and purification with scale and final purity in mind, and deliver against agreed project timelines.
  • Test targeting lipids for the tLNP platform using an SAR-based approach to guide subsequent design cycles.
  • Develop conjugation chemistries in-house or work with external partners to obtain targeted LNPs for particular target cells.
  • Build processes that enable research teams to test tLNPs in vivo.
  • Translate in vitro and in vivo data from discovery teams into structural hypotheses and optimize tLNP compositions or targeting molecule types.
  • Present experimental results and SAR conclusions, and author protocols and technical reports.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • 401(k) plan with company match.
  • Paid parental leave.
  • 20 days of PTO per year plus holidays.
  • On-site meals and snacks.
