About The Position

Computational Physics, Inc. (CPI) is seeking a full-time Scientist-Research to support customers remotely at NRL. The role is for an early-to-mid-career scientist joining a CPI and NRL team that develops whole-atmosphere versions of Navy weather prediction models, covering altitudes from the surface to 500 km. The scientist will run emerging models on Navy high-performance computing centers, analyze model output, and use findings to identify changes or additions to the code base that improve model skill, resiliency, and efficiency. Working with the broader team, the scientist will contribute code through continuous integration into the repository using an enterprise GitHub server. This includes identifying bugs, developing and testing fixes, and writing and testing code for new or improved model capabilities. The role also supports timely quarterly and annual research deliverables for NRL and downstream sponsors.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in atmospheric science, computational fluid dynamics, physics, applied mathematics, meteorology, aeronomy, or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated skill with high-level programming languages such as MPI Fortran, C++, or Java, and visualization or analysis software such as Python, IDL, or MATLAB.
  • Scientific knowledge of dynamics, physics, and chemical processes in the uppermost layers of the neutral atmosphere, particularly above 80 km altitude.
  • Ability and willingness to work within a geographically dispersed multidisciplinary team to achieve shared goals and assigned milestones.
  • Good writing and oral communication skills for clearly conveying research progress to the broader team.
  • U.S. citizenship is required for DoD contracts.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience or interest in developing code and applying state-of-the-art physics-based atmospheric models, particularly models extending into the upper atmosphere.
  • Demonstrated interest and aptitude in running, debugging, and augmenting scientific codes on multiprocessor HPC architectures.
  • Experience or interest in running multiprocessor code on massively parallel HPCs.
  • Experience working with large model-generated atmospheric data sets, such as HDF5.
  • Experience with Fortran 2003 or higher is especially applicable to the work.

Responsibilities

  • Run whole-atmosphere Navy weather prediction models on Navy high-performance computing centers.
  • Analyze model output and use findings to target code changes or additions that improve model skill, resiliency, and efficiency.
  • Collaborate with the broader team to continuously integrate code into the repository through an enterprise GitHub server.
  • Identify code bugs and devise, test, and submit appropriate fixes.
  • Write and test code that provides new or improved model capabilities.
  • Contribute to timely quarterly and annual research deliverables for NRL and downstream sponsors.
  • Communicate research progress to the broader team through GitHub and regular weekly team meetings.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits.
  • Company stock for employee-owners.
  • Opportunities for self-development and career advancement.
  • Professional development support, including conference attendance and certification training.
  • Positive, upbeat, and transparent company culture.
  • Employee-owned small business environment that allows team members to learn from each other and take ownership.
