Requirements

  • BS/BA in a technical discipline required such as physics, engineering, chemistry, or mathematics.
  • Minimum 1-year demonstrated hands-on experience beyond the classroom (such as industry or research lab) with emphasis on optical delay and photoelasticity-based measurement systems for materials metrology (i.e., polarimetry, interferometry).
  • Strong background in data collection, processing, and analysis.
  • Hands-on experience with polarization sensitive measurements and devices.
  • Experience with operating optical measurement systems and analyzing output data.
  • Familiarity with stress, strain, polarization, and stress-induced birefringence (photoelasticity).
  • Ability to solve technical problems and document them effectively.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with designing, aligning, and/or troubleshooting optical measurement systems.
  • Knowledge of coding (such as MATLAB, Python, LabView, or similar) for automation of data analysis/collection.
  • Experience with material science and material properties.
  • Strong understanding in mathematics for manipulating expressions for use of comparing theory and experiment or extracting useful measurement values/relationships.
  • Familiarity with measuring/interpreting stress from photoelasticity data.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluates materials, properties, and techniques used in research and production from an optical metrology standpoint.
  • Advises design engineering on the selection, application, and testing of optics and electronic components and systems.
  • Determines experimental requirements for components and systems.
  • Develops new techniques and analytical tools for early identification of potential problems with new products, packaging, and processes.
  • Makes recommendations for changes in the selection and application of components and systems.
  • Follows standard practices and procedures in analyzing situations or data.
  • Works with lab technical leads to develop and implement research tasks.
  • Drives research projects focusing on optical delay (retardation) and birefringence measurements, polarized light and material interactions, and data collection and analysis.
  • Develops analysis techniques for existing and novel optical systems.
  • Contributes to the creation of relevant IP to protect key inventions related to optical delay and birefringence signatures.
  • Proposes and executes research projects/activities involving optical delay and birefringence measurements.
  • Performs optical delay and birefringence measurements.
  • Implements hands-on solutions for experiment, project, or equipment requirements.
  • Develops experiment workflows for the lab and its customers.
  • Designs spreadsheet workbooks to track, analyze, and share data with research teams.
  • Develops measurement and project reports and attends meetings to communicate results.
  • Works closely with other research scientists, engineers, and technicians to execute multi-disciplinary experiments.
  • Collaborates on various materials and projects, designs experiments, and executes technology transfer with various organizations in Corning, NY, and other Corning sites.
