Scientist, mRNA Formulation

GSK•Cambridge, MA
•$89,925 - $149,875•Onsite

About The Position

The Scientist, mRNA Formulation designs and develops mRNA delivery systems to support vaccine and medicine discovery programs. The role leads laboratory studies to improve product understanding and advance development, working collaboratively with colleagues across disciplines. It is based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and requires on-site work; hybrid and remote options are not available. The scientist develops and evaluates mRNA formulations, including lipid nanoparticle platforms, and characterizes their stability, compatibility, encapsulation efficiency, physicochemical properties, and performance. The role analyzes experimental results, identifies risks and opportunities, and recommends improvements to product quality, stability, and performance. It also supports drug product development through collaboration with analytical, process development, regulatory, and quality teams; troubleshooting; laboratory documentation and reporting; and maintenance of a safe, organized, inspection-ready laboratory.

Requirements

  • A BS, MS, or PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Pharmaceutics, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biomedical Engineering, or a related scientific discipline.
  • Relevant experience matched to degree: BS plus at least 5 years, MS plus at least 3 years, or PhD with 0 years of relevant experience.
  • At least 1 year of hands-on laboratory experience developing and evaluating mRNA-LNP formulations or other nucleic acid delivery systems.

Nice To Haves

  • An advanced degree (Master’s or PhD) in a relevant discipline.
  • Experience with vaccine formulation, protein biologics, nanoparticle delivery systems, or other advanced drug delivery technologies.
  • Experience designing and executing formulation studies, stability studies, and other drug product development experiments.
  • Practical knowledge of lipid nanoparticle formulation development and characterization.
  • Knowledge of high-throughput formulation screening and stability study design.
  • Familiarity with process development, scale-up considerations, and manufacturing handoffs.
  • Familiarity with formulation characterization techniques such as dynamic light scattering, zeta potential measurement, or chromatography.

Responsibilities

  • Design, prepare, and evaluate mRNA formulations and delivery systems, including lipid nanoparticle platforms, assessing stability, compatibility, encapsulation efficiency, and performance.
  • Develop and execute formulation, stability, and stress studies to advance mRNA vaccine and therapeutic programs.
  • Characterize physicochemical properties of mRNA formulations using techniques such as dynamic light scattering, zeta potential, chromatography, and thermal analysis.
  • Analyze and interpret experimental data, identify formulation risks and opportunities, and recommend strategies to improve product quality, stability, and performance.
  • Collaborate with analytical, process development, regulatory, and quality teams to support project goals and development programs.
  • Maintain accurate laboratory records, prepare study reports, and communicate scientific findings through presentations and technical documentation.
  • Maintain the drug product laboratory in a safe, organized, and inspection-ready manner.
  • Support troubleshooting and problem-solving to address formulation challenges.
