About The Position

We are seeking a Scientist I to perform hands-on surface analysis and spectroscopy of polymeric materials with a focus on surface analysis by wettability (contact angle), Zeta potentiometry, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). This role is within the Microscopy and Surface Science R&D group providing analytical services, expertise, and support to internal and external customers pertaining to Vision and Vision Care products. The ideal candidate will have experience in laboratory analytical instrument operation, instrument repair and maintenance, calibration, method development and data interpretation.

Requirements

BS or MS in Chemistry, Polymer Science, or Materials Engineering/Science (or similar) with 0-5 years of experience and a focus on surface analysis of materials and/or spectroscopy.
Experience in performing and interpreting interfacial energy and surface energy measurements (wettability, sessile drop, pendant drop, captive bubble, etc.).
Knowledge of vibrational spectroscopy (FTIR and Raman) including data acquisition techniques and analysis methods.
Hands-on chemical lab and analytical chemistry experience including strong record keeping skills (hardcopy and electronic filing).
Creative and effective problem-solving skills to approach varied issues throughout product lifecycles and the ability to apply scientific principles to a broad range of technical assignments.
Willingness to support a wide range of customers from R&D to plant-level problem solving.
Excellent interpersonal, collaborative, and organizational skills, as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
Proficient computer skills, use of MS office software, database management and electronic notebook.

Responsibilities

Provide routine sample analysis (FTIR, wettability, etc.) for a mix of samples in response to daily changes in priorities.
Analysis of materials using techniques to include contact angle wettability measurements, interfacial energy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), gravimetric extractables, Zeta potentiometry, and quartz crystal microbalance measurements.
Analyze data, summarize results, and communicate key findings.
Contribute to R&D projects and participate in problem solving throughout product lifecycles (development, pilot, and mature manufacturing).
Interpretation of complex datasets collected across multiple techniques to provide an understanding of surface properties.
