About The Position

Lilly’s Synthetic Molecule Design and Development group is seeking an analytical chemist to support development of small-molecule drug candidates from early development through manufacturing readiness. This hands-on laboratory role involves more than 70% bench work and focuses on developing analytical methods, characterizing chemical processes, and translating analytical results into actionable insights for project teams. The scientist will apply chromatography expertise alongside complementary techniques such as mass spectrometry and NMR, partnering closely with synthetic chemists and process engineers to address process development challenges. The position is based at Lilly Technology Center-North in Indianapolis, Indiana. Potential exposure includes chemicals, allergens, and loud noises. Travel is 0–10%.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemistry, or a related field.
  • At least 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Authorization to work in the United States on a full-time basis; Lilly will not sponsor or support work authorization or visas for this role.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with chromatographic (LC, GC, IC) method development or validation in a pharmaceutical, chemical, or regulated-industry setting.
  • Working knowledge of mass spectrometry (LC-MS, GC-MS) and NMR spectroscopy.
  • Familiarity with chemical process development, synthetic organic chemistry, and rationales for establishing material specifications and testing plans.
  • Experience troubleshooting and maintaining analytical instrumentation.
  • Demonstrated scientific leadership and ability to influence others.
  • Ability to balance multiple responsibilities, prioritize activities, and navigate ambiguity.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and optimize analytical methods to measure purity, potency, and other critical quality attributes of small-molecule drug substances and synthetic intermediates.
  • Select and implement appropriate analytical techniques, including HPLC, GC, NMR, and MS, to support chemical process development.
  • Independently generate analytical data to elucidate reaction mechanisms, characterize kinetic behavior, and identify process-related impurities.
  • Collaborate with synthetic chemists and process engineers to ensure methods guide development activities and can be transferred to GMP laboratories for routine testing and manufacturing support.
  • Perform laboratory work safely and with technical rigor while following local policies and procedures.
  • Apply new scientific concepts and problem-solving skills, contributing across multiple projects.
  • Communicate the technical aspects and business implications of work through strong written and verbal communication.

Benefits

  • Company bonus, depending in part on company and individual performance.
  • Eligibility to participate in a company-sponsored 401(k).
  • Pension.
  • Vacation benefits.
  • Eligibility for medical, dental, vision, and prescription drug benefits.
  • Flexible benefits, such as healthcare and/or dependent day care flexible spending accounts.
  • Life insurance and death benefits.
  • Certain time-off and leave-of-absence benefits.
  • Well-being benefits, including an employee assistance program, fitness benefits, and employee clubs and activities.
