About The Position

Peraton requires a software systems engineer to support the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) ocean modeling team in Scientific Software Development at the Stennis Space Center, Mississippi. The role involves utilizing METOC simulation pipelines, data assimilation systems, and high-performance computing to support the development and optimization of Navy ocean models, including the Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM) and the Navy Coupled Ocean Data assimilation (NCODA) system. The engineer will develop, test, and debug scientific software using languages such as Fortran, Python, and C++, and integrate with Navy-specific systems like NCOM and NCODA-var to improve model performance and support the transition of research to operational systems. Responsibilities also include improving model coupling, enhancing data assimilation techniques, creating and maintaining comprehensive software documentation, and contributing to technical reports and publications to support the objectives of NRL Code 7320.

Requirements

  • 5 years with BS/BA; 3 years with MS/MA
  • Secret security clearance
  • Specific experience in scientific software development
  • Demonstrated experience with meteorological and oceanographic (METOC) simulation pipelines, real-time data assimilation systems.
  • Demonstrated experience with modern software programming languages: Fortran, Python, Java, C, C++, Assembly and Matlab.
  • Demonstrated experience with Linux environment and scripting: Bash/KSH, Perl, NCAR Command-Language.
  • Demonstrated experience with modern software development, deployment practices for scientific environments, compilers and workload managers/schedulers: MPI, PBS/Slurm, Netbeans, Eclipse, Vi, Ansible, Git/SVN, GCC/Gfortran, IFX/ICC/Ifort, make, NetCDF, BUFR, GRIB1/2, GDB, Valgrind, Linux/Unix.
