About The Position

GTSC’s Global Sciences and Technology (GST) business unit seeks a Scientific Programmer for Remote Sensing Applications to support NOAA/NESDIS/STAR. The position is based in College Park, Maryland, with teleworking or a weekly hybrid onsite/telework arrangement possible. It is a long-term position contingent upon performance. The successful candidate will work with Sea Surface Temperature (SST) scientists and software developers in the Satellite Oceanography and Climatology Division (SOCD), within the NOAA Center for Satellite Applications and Research (STAR). The role focuses on developing and maintaining scientific code used to produce SST datasets from multiple low Earth orbit and geostationary sensors, and on developing and implementing improved cloud-masking, SST-retrieval, and error-characterization algorithms. This scientific role requires a strong understanding of physical science, mathematics, and scientific computing.

Requirements

  • PhD in a quantitative research field such as Physics, Math, Statistics, Remote Sensing, Oceanography, or Meteorology, completed by the date of hire; an MS with relevant experience in a similar field will be considered.
  • Knowledge of remote sensing, satellite and oceanographic data, systems, and analyses.
  • Proficiency with C++, Fortran, and Python.
  • Experience with multithreaded programming tools such as OpenMP, MPI, and CUDA.
  • Experience applying machine-learning algorithms using PyTorch or TensorFlow.
  • Experience with remote-sensing data formats such as netCDF4, HDF5, HDF4, and Zarr.
  • Familiarity with Linux operating systems and common tools such as SSH.
  • A proven list of deliverables, such as peer-reviewed publications, derived products, or software packages.
