About The Position

The American Heart Association Scientific Publishing team is looking for a part-time Scientific Journals Editorial Intern interested in developing experience in scientific journal publishing and peer review. The selected candidate will learn best practices for and contribute to journal editorial office workflow, coordinate projects to streamline the manuscript submission system, and manage documentation for Scientific Statements and Guidelines, as well as other tasks as identified. Individuals will obtain practical experience and receive hands-on training in scientific publishing. In this position, you will work closely with the scientific publishing team to support the overall management of the American Heart Association journals. Requirements

  • Seniors, and graduate students pursuing a degree in publishing, technical writing, or biology or other science-related fields are encouraged to apply.
  • Experience managing projects preferred.
  • Experience working with volunteers, particularly science volunteers.
  • Strong customer service and organizational skills.
  • Ability to communicate information accurately and effectively to multiple audiences.
  • Experience working with databases and electronic reporting tools.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms preferred.
  • Excellent proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.
  • Reliable WiFi Connection
  • Minimum availability of 25 hrs/wk, M-F between the hours of 8:30am-5pm ET or CT.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship, now or in the future.
  • For any roles working remotely, the work must also be performed inside the United States, not in a foreign country.

  • Familiarity with social media platforms preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Submit manuscripts through peer review according to editorial office best practices.
  • Track submissions for special issues or conference publications.
  • Develop and implement consistent language for instruction pages.
  • Research manuscripts in submission system and external databases such as PubMed.
  • Compile and review author and reviewer disclosure statements.
  • Manage reprint permission requests and relevant communications with journal publisher.
  • Contribute to journals' social media activities as needed.
  • Formalize and document staff training material.
  • Assist management with special projects as needed/assigned.
