Science & Technology Intern - Optical Modeling - Summer 2027

Corning•City of Corning, NY
•$42,510 - $82,810

About The Position

The intern will support research to build a fundamental understanding of how micro-deformations affect the optical properties of micro-structured optical fibers. The intern will devise an approach for modeling fiber optical performance, implement and verify models using optical modeling software, and run simulations to generate data for fibers under test. The intern will interpret the results, draw conclusions from the data, and deliver a final technical report and presentation. The intern will review relevant prior work and contribute to a research plan. Working with scientists, they will learn techniques as needed, plan and carry out project steps, implement models, run simulations, document and communicate results, analyze data, and provide recommendations to the team. The position is a 10-week internship during Summer 2027 (May–August 2027). Applicants must be pursuing a master's or Ph.D. in a relevant discipline and have a graduation date of December 2027 or later. The position does not support immigration sponsorship.

Requirements

  • Be pursuing an MS or Ph.D. in Optical Sciences, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Have expertise in optical physics and modeling of wave-optics phenomena.
  • Be able to develop a hypothesis and a modeling plan to test it.
  • Have excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information effectively.
  • Have experience working in a research lab and writing reports.
  • Be available for 10 weeks during Summer 2027 (May–August 2027), with a graduation date of December 2027 or later.
  • Be interested in working for Corning after graduation if offered a full-time position.
  • Be willing to work at the posted job location(s).
