About The Position

The purpose of this role is to plan, organize, and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development. The teacher is responsible for managing instructional time, student behavior, instructional presentation, monitoring student performance, providing instructional feedback, facilitating instruction, interacting within the educational environment, and performing non-instructional duties.

Requirements

  • Degree in education or a related area that qualifies for licensure as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
  • Ability to use various equipment and classroom tools such as computers, copiers, typewriters, calculators, pencils, scissors, and equipment for children with special needs.
  • Ability to exert a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
  • Physical requirements consistent with Light Work due to time spent standing and/or walking.
  • Ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or composite characteristics of data, people, or things.
  • Ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information, including receiving instructions, assignments, and/or directions from superiors.
  • Ability to read a variety of correspondence, reports, handbooks, forms, lists, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Manage instructional time by having materials ready, creating lessons based on the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NCSCOS), getting the class started quickly, getting students on task quickly, and maintaining a high level of student time-on-task.
  • Manage student behavior by establishing rules and procedures for routine matters, student participation, and movement in the classroom; monitoring student behavior and stopping inappropriate behavior promptly and consistently while maintaining student dignity.
  • Present instruction by reviewing previous materials, introducing new lessons and objectives, speaking fluently and precisely, using understandable concepts and language, providing relevant examples and demonstrations, assigning tasks with a high success rate, asking appropriate questions, conducting lessons at a brisk pace while adjusting for understanding, making efficient transitions, clarifying assignments, and summarizing main points.
  • Monitor student performance by maintaining clear work standards and due dates, circulating to check performance during class work, using oral and written work products to check progress, and posing questions clearly.
  • Provide instructional feedback on in-class work to encourage student growth and regularly provide prompt feedback on out-of-class work, affirming correct responses and providing sustaining feedback after incorrect responses.
  • Facilitate instruction by having an instructional plan compatible with school and system-wide goals, using data-informed practices and diagnostic information to revise objectives/tasks, maintaining accurate records, aligning objectives, strategies, assessments, and student needs, and using available resources.
  • Interact effectively with students, co-workers, parents, and the community, treating all students fairly and equitably.
  • Perform non-instructional duties as assigned, adhere to laws and policies, and develop a plan for professional development.
  • Coordinate and direct the activities of teacher assistants.
  • Constantly monitor the safety and well-being of students, particularly in inclusive activities.
  • Perform other related work as required.
