About The Position

The Science Laboratory Technician manages laboratories, ensuring adequate stock and working condition of equipment, tools, chemicals, and materials. This role provides guidance to teaching faculty and students on the appropriate and safe use of laboratory facilities. The technician assists in setting up experiments and practical demonstrations to enhance theoretical learning and maintains compliance with health, safety, and security regulations. This position description outlines the general nature, level, and requirements of the work but is not exhaustive.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or its equivalent, from a recognized college or university, with a major in Biology, Chemistry, or other scientific discipline, or related field.
  • One year laboratory experience.
  • Valid state driver's license.
  • Must be able to pass background check, with NO prior convictions of any felonies.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of laboratory operation.
  • Knowledge of experimental procedures, protocols, and preparation techniques within area of specialty.
  • Knowledge of complex laboratory techniques, equipment, terminology, materials and substances.
  • Skilled in the use of laboratory equipment.
  • Skill in operating business computers, phone systems, and office machines, including in a Windows environment, specifically Word, Excel, Access, and presentation software (such as PowerPoint).
  • Skill in providing guidance and instruction in laboratory protocols and in the safe use of laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds and with co-workers at all levels.
  • Ability to set up, calibrate, operate, and maintain standard laboratory and test equipment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in verbal or written format.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in the Navajo and English language.

Responsibilities

  • Sets up equipment for use in labs according to specifications.
  • Ensures proper operation of equipment.
  • Performs tests and procedures using laboratory equipment.
  • Monitors and assists with purchasing of laboratory supplies and materials.
  • Prepares various test specimens for use in science or related labs.
  • Prepares chemical solutions for use in lab experiments.
  • Assists students in lab experimentation, as appropriate; provides guidance in learning and/or functional operation of experiments and equipment.
  • Cleans and disinfects lab facilities and equipment after lab exercises are complete.
  • Breaks down and stores supplies and equipment.
  • Practices safety, environmental, and/or infection control methods.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
