About The Position

The School Safety Officer is responsible for implementing the consistent daily application of procedures and best practices to ensure the safety, security, and welfare of all staff and students at Yvonne B. Miller High School and Post-Secondary Programs. This position reports directly to the Director of School Security and Staff Safety.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the principles, techniques, and practices of safety and security.
  • Knowledge of adolescent development to include brain development, mental health, and impulse regulation.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with colleagues and students.
  • Ability to carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Knowledge of conflict resolution and crisis intervention.
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly assess situations and provide the appropriate response.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to perform physical intervention (restraint) techniques in accordance with procedure and training.
  • Considerable work-related experience, including security-related experience.
  • Must be able to successfully complete the Department of Juvenile Justice-mandated training and certifications, including DJJ Basic Skills for Security.
  • Successful candidates must be able to attain DCJS School Security Officer Certification within 60 days of hire with continued SSO re-certification every 2 years.
  • A valid driver’s license is required.

  • Experience supervising and interacting with at-risk or adjudicated juveniles.

Responsibilities

  • Implementing the consistent daily application of procedures and best practices to ensure the safety, security, and welfare of all staff and students at Yvonne B. Miller High School and Post-Secondary Programs.
  • Monitoring student behavior and deterring inappropriate behavior while in the education setting.
  • Performing physical intervention (restraint) techniques in accordance with procedure and training.
  • Maintaining records/documentation and preparing reports.
