About The Position

The School Safety Associate provides a safe and secure environment for students, staff and visitors by patrolling/monitoring all activity at assigned location(s). The School Safety Associate maintains visibility and vigilance, establishes rapport and relates professionally with students and staff. Must be able to make sound decisions in dealing with emergency/non-emergency situations. May be assigned traffic control. Assignment location is primarily (but not exclusively) school-based with Police Department supervision and School Administrator collaboration.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a safety environment, security environment, law enforcement environment or other related work environment is required
  • Possess a valid Kansas Driver’s License
  • Must submit to a pre-employment background check with no felony or major misdemeanor convictions as required by the State of Kansas for criminal justice agencies
  • Hold and maintain an NCIC Certification within one (1) year of employment
  • Must obtain basic certifications for: National Incident Command System (ICS) and National Incident Management System (NIMS).
  • Knowledge of Kansas City, Kansas Public School Board Policies, Student Code of Conduct and School Safety / Crisis Plans
  • Knowledge of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED)

Responsibilities

  • Provides a warm customer service experience in all interactions with students, staff and visitors
  • Monitor entryways, exits and building perimeters at assigned site(s) for the assigned duration of time.
  • Respond to, report on and take proactive steps to deter inappropriate actions or activities, from both internal and external sources, utilizing de-escalation and conflict resolution.
  • Ability to operate office equipment and security equipment, including but not limited to desktop computer and Microsoft Office Suite applications, phones, handheld radio, X-Ray machines and Metal detectors
  • Evaluate crime prevention measures, assist with crisis plans and respond to school emergencies with professional composure while assisting district staff and community partners
  • Assist with management of crowd control for school activities, sport/special events as assigned while working flexible shifts.
  • Assist with administration of the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) procedures, safety audits as required or requested and identify building and property safety concerns in partnership with Administrators and Police Department staff.
  • Be familiar with building emergency action and evacuation plans
  • Exemplifies a high level of ethical behavior and protects the confidentiality of information as expected of all Police Department staff.
  • Maintains paperwork related to activities and documentation of incidents
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Chief of Police
