About The Position

The School Safety and Security Specialist manages and directs the security operations of the District; coordinates security planning pertaining to the personal security of the students, staff, and public; cooperatively plans the District’s implementation of facilities’ security devices, patrols, and alarms; and develops and maintains a secure environment in conjunction with the District’s goal of a safe learning and working environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, emergency management, public administration, education administration, or a related field preferred.
  • Current Nebraska Drivers License
  • Five years of progressively responsible experience in security, emergency response, and emergency preparedness.
  • Knowledgeable about safety and security issues in a public setting.
  • Demonstrates understanding of Pre-K – 12 educational environment and the unique challenges present.
  • Able to apply knowledge and expertise of security to the school environment in a thoughtful and results-oriented manner in order to ensure a safe and secure school environment.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common educational journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries from parents, staff, and others.
  • Ability to speak about the school district and our safety and security programs to community groups.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to deal with abstract and concrete information.
  • Ability to make decisions in a timely manner, utilizing input from others as appropriate.
  • Ability to represent the school district to the public in a manner that evokes respect and confidence.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in the area of safety, security, leadership, and other areas as needed.
  • Skill in effecting good employee relations including the ability to function effectively in confrontational situations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to resolve conflicts.

  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.

Nice To Haves

  • Certifications related to emergency management, school safety, or related field preferred
  • Experience working within a K-12 public school system preferred

Responsibilities

  • Plan, develop, and direct the District security and personal security program including comprehensive procedures and policies which pertain to the security of all District locations as well as students, staff, and others at these locations for District business.
  • Ensure that a District-wide Crisis Preparedness Program is developed and regularly reviewed in cooperation with district groups and community agencies (i.e. law enforcement, emergency management agencies).
  • Provide leadership in the evaluation and use of technology for security purposes and technical security systems.
  • Consistently partner with administrators at each school and district location to ensure proper security and safety measures are implemented as related to students, employees, facilities, and property.
  • Communicate effectively with school personnel, parents, law enforcement, media, various community agencies, and members of the community.
  • Partner with Coordinator of Public Relations and Communications, as needed, to coordinate any media communications related to district safety and security.
  • Work cooperatively, and in consultation, with appropriate District departments.
  • Coordinate training for District staff, make presentations, act as a resource, and make recommendations to administrators in the areas of security and emergency response, within scope of responsibilities.
  • Walk facilities, attend drills, and participate in emergency response activities.
  • Direct/coordinate the periodic assessment /audit of school facilities and grounds to determine safety and security issues.
  • Compile, analyze, evaluate, and collect security information and statistics; develop reports for all appropriate locations, by department or at the district level on security risks, e.g., threats, restraining orders, inappropriate communications, etc. as appropriate.
  • Remain current on best practices in school security and safety by attending conferences, reading literature, communicating with security experts, etc.
  • Oversee and coordinate the process to approve parents and community members as volunteers in the District.
  • Provide periodic reports to the Superintendent and the School Board on matters pertaining to school safety.
  • Represent the District at meetings with outside agencies as appropriate.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Provide training and direction for Secured Access Entrance Monitors.
  • Serve as a liaison with local law enforcement to monitor the Satellite Police Station Program and other law enforcement issues on school campuses.
  • Chair or participate in district committees.
  • Other duties as assigned.
