About The Position

This role is responsible for promoting student responsibility, assisting with the safety of students and staff, and ensuring the security of school facilities. The Safety Officer/Security Monitor will provide protection for all students, staff, and property.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a High School Diploma/College Degree, preferred.
  • Must possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license.
  • One year or more of progressively responsible experience in a security-related field.
  • Demonstrates excellent integrity and good moral character and initiative.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills, including the ability to triage/prioritize competing needs.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the proven ability to effectively communicate with students and families from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
  • Proven ability to relate to and work with a variety of constituencies including but not limited to: administrators, teachers, other school staff members, parents/guardians/caregivers, students, visitors, and the community.
  • Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment including computers, copiers, adding machines, etc.
  • Must be able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, and pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
  • Must be able to stand, crouch and bend over for a long period of time at intervals throughout the day.
  • Ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural or composite characteristics of data, people or things.
  • Ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information, including giving instructions, assignments or directions.
  • Ability to read a variety of correspondence, reports, forms, newsletters, schedules, manuals, invoices, requisitions, menus, recipes, journals, etc.
  • Ability to prepare correspondence, reports, forms, evaluations, procedures, charts, surveys, articles, bid specifications, brochures, news releases, handbooks, budgets, etc., using prescribed formats and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style.
  • Ability to speak before groups of people with poise, voice control and confidence.
  • Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form; and to deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • Ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of technical or professional languages including medical, legal, accounting and marketing terminology.
  • Ability to utilize mathematical formulas; to add and subtract; multiply and divide; utilize decimals and percentages; and to apply the principles of algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.
  • Ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using office equipment.
  • Ability to handle a variety of items such as office equipment and hand tools.
  • Minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
  • Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions.
  • Adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with emergency situations.
  • Ability to talk (expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words) and hear (perceiving nature of sounds by ear).
  • Ability to communicate via telephone or radio.

Responsibilities

  • Greets, registers, and screens visitors at the school entrance, assigning visitor passes and directing them to the proper destination.
  • Patrols and monitors assigned areas of the school buildings, grounds, and parking lots to deter, detect, and report violations of school policy and law.
  • Detects, investigates, and reports unauthorized or suspicious persons, vehicles, and activities to building administration.
  • Assists with monitoring and directing student movement throughout assigned school and properties.
  • Notifies administrative staff or other appropriate authorities of security or emergency situations.
  • Operates metal detectors and conducts searches when directed.
  • Assists with fire drills, lockdown drills, and other emergency preparedness drills.
  • Attends and successfully completes all staff development training as required.
  • Aids in monitoring and ensuring smooth and safe traffic flow at arrival and dismissal.
  • Remains highly visible at all times and serves as a resource for all students, staff, and visitors.
  • Works closely with school resource officers (SRO) and building custodians on safety and security matters.
  • Aids in monitoring security cameras and ensuring exterior doors are secure.
  • Assists in security-related issues and activities after school hours for events such as open house and sporting events.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
