About The Position

PRIMARY FUNCTION: Supervises instruction and curriculum development; functions as building manager, staff developer, and school/community relations specialist.

Requirements

  • Hold and maintain a valid Postgraduate Professional License with an endorsement as a School Principal.
  • Must possess demonstrated leadership qualities and personal characteristic necessary for working effectively with students, teachers, and parents, as attested to by the Division Superintendent of schools.
  • Candidate must possess good moral character.

Responsibilities

  • INSTRUCTIONAL LEADERSHIP - focuses on the support and leadership provided in the areas of personnel, curriculum, and staff development for the explicit purpose of enhancing instructional programs.
  • Assume responsibility for state and federal accreditation status of school.
  • Plan, implement, support, and assess instructional programs that enhance teaching and student achievement of the Standards of Learning.
  • Communicate a clear vision of excellence and continuous improvement consistent with the goals of the school division.
  • Ensure that staff members design coherent instruction based upon knowledge of subject matter, current instructional practices, students, the community, and curriculum goals.
  • Supervise the alignment, coordination and delivery of assigned programs and /or curricular areas.
  • Visit the classrooms frequently to observe firsthand the instructional methods, materials, and procedures used by teachers.
  • Provide and encourage staff to take advantage of professional growth activities consistent with program evaluation results and school instructional improvement plans.
  • Advise teachers regarding instruction, classroom management, and student discipline.
  • Oversee the coordination of school based testing programs.
  • Manage all special education functions, including child study, eligibility, IEP implementation, and program assessments.
  • Develop a master schedule which maximizes student learning.
  • PLANNING AND ASSESSMENT - includes responsibilities for assessing instructional programs and personnel and/ or planning responsive improvement plans to promote student learning.
  • Conduct studies, surveys, and research as directed by the Division.
  • Employ various processes for gathering, analyzing, and using data for decision making, and for evaluation school programs and strategies.
  • Develop and implement a school improvement plan that results in increased student learning.
  • Involve the community and staff in the preparation and implementation of an annual school plan, which shall be approved by the Superintendent.
  • ORGANIZATIONAL MANAGEMENT- refers to the responsibilities for the management of the organization’s operations and climate, with particular attention to ensuring safety and meaningful student learning.
  • Assume responsibility for all funds collected, internal accounting, and preparing monthly financial statements as required by the School Board.
  • Assume responsibility for reviewing applications, interviewing, and making recommendations to the Director of Human Resources.
  • Provide for the evaluation of the school staff in compliance with policies prescribed by the Alleghany County School Board for the purpose of selecting, supporting, and retaining quality instructional and support personnel.
  • Identify, analyze, and resolve problems using effective problem-solving techniques.
  • Coordinate the daily operation of the assigned area of responsibility.
  • Interpret School Board, State Board of Education and Virginia School Law rules and regulations to staff.
  • Demonstrate effective organizational skills to achieve school, community, and division goals.
  • Hold regular faculty meetings and maintains effective communication with all school personnel.
  • Maintain sensitivity to individual personal staff situations and problems.
  • Assign all staff in the school to such duties and activities as are necessary for the efficient operation of the school.
  • Oversee that all staff members keep and submit accurate and up-to-date records as required.
  • Maintain the attractiveness of building and grounds, report needed repairs to the maintenance department.
  • Coordinate the planning and implementing of the school budget.
  • Ensure the maintenance of accurate financial records and provide for the receipt of all funds in accordance with state accounting procedures, including extracurricular activity funds.
  • Maintain a current inventory of all supplies, materials, and equipment located on school property.
  • Administer school rules and regulations which conform to the regulations of the County School Board of Alleghany and the State Board of Education.
  • Coordinate with Athletic Director, sponsors and coaches on supervising, coverage, and scheduling of all extracurricular activities when applicable.
  • Coordinate the safe and efficient utilization of the school facilities for instructional, extracurricular and community activities.
  • Conduct fund raising activities in accordance with School Board regulations
  • Maintain a school handbook of policies and procedures, including the school division’s standards of student conduct and enforcement procedures, along with matters of interest to parents and students.
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned by the Superintendent.
  • STUDENT SERVICES - includes the responsibilities relevant to the supervision, discipline, health, and safety of students engaged in curricular, co-curricular, and/or extra-curricular programs and activities:
  • Implement a discipline policy that fosters a safe and positive environment for all students and staff.
  • Assume responsibility for assigning faculty member(s) to supervise the loading and unloading of school buses, parent pick-up and drop-off stations and to ensure the security of the student parking lot(s).
  • Maintain and ensure the security of student records according to local, state and federal guidelines.
  • Assume responsibility for the supervision of students during the school day, while being transported to and from school, on school trips and during activity or functions sponsored by the school and attended by students.
  • Ensure that the Character Counts pillars are displayed and emphasized throughout the school.
  • Make a careful daily check of student absences and require an excuse following each absence.
  • Ensure accurate reporting of student membership.
  • Recognize and reward students’ academic, extracurricular, and/or conduct achievements when applicable.
  • Confer with individual students and student groups.
  • SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY RELATIONS - refers to the two-way communication to promote understanding, support, and continuous improvement of the organization’s programs and services within schools and the larger community.
  • Work collaboratively with staff, families, and community members to secure resources and to support the success of a diverse population.
  • Arrange special events and prepare communications that help to interpret the school’s programs to the parents and the community.
  • Respond to needs and concerns of parents and other community members or agencies.
  • Establish and utilize a school parent advisory committee, and facilitate and promote the success of applicable parent-teacher organizations and/or booster clubs.
  • Work in a collegial and collaborative manner with other administrators, school personnel, and the community to promote and support the mission and goals of the school division.
  • Review requests and grant permission for the use of school facilities by community groups.
  • Develop necessary bulletins and communications to students and parents.
  • Use the resources of the community and involve parents and citizens in evaluating the school program, developing the School Improvement Plan, volunteer services in the school, and programs of supplemental instruction or enrichment.
  • Contact parents immediately, or as soon as reasonably possible, in the event of an accident, serious illness, or other matters pertaining to the general welfare of the student.
  • PROFESSIONALISM- defines the responsibilities for demonstrating a commitment to professional ethics and growth and for complying with school divisions’ policies and procedures.
  • Provide service to the profession, the division, and the community.
  • Notify the superintendent and designate one person who is employed in the school to act in his or her behalf when prevented by illness or other causes from performing the required duties.
  • Serve as a member of such committees and attend such meetings as the superintendent shall direct.
  • Comply with and support school division regulations and policies.
  • Maintain licensure at the state and/or national level; assume responsibility for professional growth.
  • Demonstrate non-discriminatory practices in all activities.
  • Serve as role model to staff for continuous professional development.
  • Serve as role model for professional demeanor and ethical behavior for students, staff, parents and community.
