About The Position

At Skylight, content designers work on cross-functional teams to strategize and advocate for user-centered content practices, plain language, and inclusivity, all while delivering on business objectives. The work can range from a standalone piece of content, to supporting an end-to-end service journey. Content designers also help design content governance strategies and workflows in a user-centered context. In this role, you will help create clear, actionable content for people enrolled in Medicaid — content that can make the difference between someone staying covered or losing access to essential healthcare. Your work will support individuals and families navigating complex government systems, helping remove barriers, reduce confusion, and promote continuity of care. The work you do has real-world impact, improving access to critical services and advancing more equitable outcomes for communities across the country.

Requirements

  • Able to advocate for the value of a content-driven approach through actions such as training and guiding your team and stakeholders on content design best practices
  • Can think strategically about the role of content, including how it impacts the overall business and how users experience a product or service
  • Able to take an evidence-based, decision-making approach to content design through actions such as testing your hypotheses with users
  • Able to apply best practices for writing user-centered content, from producing microcopy to defining content standards and style guidelines
  • Possess or able to acquire basic tech skills, such as editing website content directly using markup languages (e.g., HTML)
  • Ability to work successfully within a professional services environment (e.g., can communicate effectively with clients)
  • Passionate about creating better public outcomes through great government services
  • A mindset and work approach that aligns with our core values
  • Ability to travel for work from time to time

  • Experience collaborating with state government partners

Responsibilities

  • Improve government services by tailoring pertinent information to the needs of their users
  • Research, edit, write, and organize content describing government programs and initiatives
  • Write clear, usable, and accessible text in plain language
  • Set the tone for content and develop a unified voice
  • Write UX copy (e.g., user interface copy, microcopy, error messaging, notifications, in-product copy) for government applications
  • Test content with users and make adjustments based on user feedback
  • Offer recommendations on how to deliver a consistent, sustainable and standards-driven content strategy across projects, services, and products
  • Plan and facilitate content strategy workshops and brainstorming sessions
  • Support implementation of H.R. 1 Medicaid community engagement requirements in partnership with state agencies
  • Research, interpret, and translate federal and state Medicaid policy into clear, user-centered, plain-language content
  • Write and refine state notices and outreach materials to ensure clarity, accessibility, and regulatory alignment
  • Develop integrated, multi-channel communications (e.g., paper notices, text messages, portal messages) to effectively engage beneficiaries
  • Partner with state agencies to deliver consistent, standards-driven messaging that guides individuals through renewal and reporting processes
