About The Position

The Office of School Health (OSH) is a joint program of the Department of Education and the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, responsible for promoting the health of 1.3 million school-aged children in approximately 1,800 public and non-public schools across New York City. OSH provides mandated clinical services, public health initiatives, chronic disease management, reproductive health care, and case management to ensure that students are healthy and ready to learn. Physicians in OSH also review medical accommodations, respond to public health emergencies, and coordinate with community providers to support the health and safety of students.

Requirements

• Possession of a valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York
• Valid Board Certification issued by the appropriate American Specialty Board in any specialty area required by the agency; or Current approved application on file for admission to the certifying examination given by the appropriate American Specialty Board in any specialty area required by the agency.
• One year of satisfactory experience practicing in the specialty area (for Assignment Level II)
• A Master's degree in Public Health, or equivalent Master's degree, including or supplemented by graduate credits in epidemiology and biostatistics. Completion of Epidemic Intelligence Service program of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention may be used to substitute for this Master's degree (for Assignment Level III)
• At least two years of satisfactory experience after receipt of the Master's degree, or equivalent, in the practice of epidemiology. Specialty Board Certification or eligibility may be substituted for one year of this experience (for Assignment Level III)
• Completion of an approved residency program in an accredited hospital, including three years of experience, in either internal medicine, or family practice, or pediatrics, or another related specialty area required by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (for Assignment Level IV)
• Valid board certification or board eligibility issued by the appropriate American Subspecialty Board in Infectious Disease, Pulmonary Medicine, or a related subspecialty (for Assignment Level IV)
• Completion of an approved fellowship program in an accredited hospital, including two years of experience, in either infectious diseases, or pulmonary medicine, or another related subspecialty required by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (for Assignment Level IV)

Responsibilities

• Work within the mandates, policies and protocols of the Office of School Health
• Perform mandated physical examinations (new Admissions exams, Sports Physicals, and Working Papers Physicals
• Improve the health of students through case management chronic diseases, preventative health screening and counseling, health education and referrals
• Develop relationships with community health providers in order to optimize medical management of students with health issues
• Attend to health needs and medical issues specific of all students in a designated school community
• Utilize the Automated Student Health record (ASHR) to maintain accurate student health records
• Complete medical accommodations review s efficiently, using sound clinical judgement, coordinating services when appropriate
• Participate in meetings concerning student medical needs at schools
• Implement initiatives that promote positive health behaviors
• Support the development of School educational and prevention programs specifically designed to promote the health and wellness of students
• Provide clinical assistance in the event of an environmental or communicable disease occurrence
• Provide health education/presentations to school staff, community organization, parents, or students
• Support all medical initiatives established by the office of School Health, e.g. Asthma, Reproductive health, Obesity, and Diabetes programs and protocols
• Develop and maintain professional relationship and communicate effectively within the school community and community-based organizations
• Keep abreast of health management policy statements and emerging clinicals research related to school health
• Participate in OSH research and quality improvement activities
• Attend all mandated DOHMH and OSH trainings
