About The Position

This position is a dual role, combining the responsibilities of a School Nutrition Assistant (4 hours) and a Custodian (4 hours) at Blackburn Elementary. The School Nutrition Assistant assists the manager in kitchen operations, ensuring nutritious meals are served in a clean environment, and is involved in food production, training, and record-keeping. The Custodian performs general maintenance and cleaning of school buildings and grounds. This is a full-time, 8-hour per day position.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • One to two years of experience in food preparation in an institutional setting or childcare (for SN Assistant).
  • Two years of experience in custodial work (for Custodian).
  • Ability to operate commercial kitchen equipment, including ovens, steamers, and utensils.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds on occasion, exert up to 25 pounds of force regularly, or 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects (SN Assistant).
  • Ability to stand for hours, bend, twist, lift, stoop, and reach overhead (SN Assistant).
  • Ability to operate vacuum cleaners, carpet shampooers, buffers, brooms, mops, and small hand tools (Custodian).
  • Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects (Custodian).

Responsibilities

  • Assisting the School Nutrition Manager in overseeing kitchen operations, including food production, training, and community relations.
  • Performing duties as a cook, cashier, server, or helper on a rotation basis.
  • Ensuring compliance with the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) for Free and Reduced meals, including accurate record-keeping.
  • Participating in food preparation, serving, cleaning, temperature checks, cashiering, and sanitation tasks.
  • Ordering food and supplies, submitting payroll and attendance records, and managing inventory.
  • Operating a computer for ordering and record-keeping.
  • Preparing, cooking, and serving meals according to standardized recipes, including special diets.
  • Using batch cooking methods and replenishing serving lines.
  • Ensuring safe and sanitary practices according to health department and HACCP standards.
  • Reviewing menus and production records, ordering food items, and suggesting menu substitutions.
  • Unpacking, transporting, and transferring food items.
  • Assisting with receiving, storing, handling, preparing, and serving food.
  • Checking deliveries for invoice accuracy and reporting shortages or quality issues.
  • Monitoring and reporting receipt of items of unacceptable quality or condition.
  • Overseeing storage of food and non-food supplies, maintaining cleanliness and organization of storage areas.
  • Serving meals, answering inquiries about food items, and providing customer service.
  • Preparing fresh fruits, vegetables, salads, sandwiches, and baking items.

  • Enforcing standards of cleanliness, health, and safety.
  • Supporting sanitation processes, maintaining sanitizer levels, and cleaning utensils and equipment.
  • Sweeping, mopping, high dusting, cleaning floor drains, and managing garbage disposal.
  • Assisting with wrapping, labeling, and storing food, and recording leftovers and food usage.
  • Taking and recording temperatures of foods and equipment.
  • Completing assigned reports, including temperature logs, production records, and cashier summaries.
  • Assisting with dating and storing food deliveries.
  • Following workplace safety procedures and using personal protective equipment.
  • Receiving training on and using the time management system.
  • Potentially serving as the Person in Charge (PIC) in the manager's absence, responsible for safe food production and service.
  • Establishing and maintaining positive working relationships with students, staff, and the public.
  • Ensuring compliance with food safety practices regarding dress and hygiene.
  • Attending workshops and classes to enhance knowledge of food services.
  • Performing other related work as required.
  • Performing general custodial duties including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and cleaning floors.
  • Washing walls, woodwork, fixtures, windows, and blinds.
  • Dusting and cleaning desks and furniture.
  • Emptying trash receptacles and depositing recyclable materials.
  • Inspecting heating systems and patrolling buildings for safety or maintenance issues.
  • Sweeping sidewalks, policing grounds, shoveling snow, and applying de-icing compounds.
  • Disinfecting high-touched and widespread areas.
  • Opening and securing buildings, adjusting lighting and HVAC systems.
  • Arranging furniture for meetings and events.
  • Lifting and moving furniture, equipment, and supplies.
  • Working at special school events as required.
  • Performing other related functions as directed by the supervisor.
