About The Position

Michigan School for the Deaf (MSD) is a bilingual school with a residential component for students who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH), utilizing an American Sign Language (ASL)/English bilingual approach. The school nurse collaborates with educational and healthcare teams to provide health services, enabling student participation in education. The nurse assesses, treats, and evaluates health conditions, may delegate and supervise support staff, and is a leader in health promotion, disease prevention, and maintaining a safe school environment.

Requirements

  • Substantial specialized knowledge and skill in general, emergency, mental health or rehabilitation nursing.
  • CPR - AHA American Heart Association Upon Hire
  • Basic Life Support Instructor (BLS INSTR) - AHA American Heart Association 1 Year
  • First Aid - AHA American Heart Association
  • Trach and vent training.
  • Good communication skills, in either English, American Sign Language, or both.
  • Valid Michigan Registered Nurse License
  • Graduation from accredited school of nursing with a B.A. or Associates degree in nursing.
  • Ability to travel out-of-state, work overnight and weekends.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to communicate in American Sign Language or willingness to take classes toward proficiency in American Sign Language.
  • School Nurse certificate

Responsibilities

  • Staff the Health Center at MSD, including residential facilities, to provide emergency medical needs to staff and students.
  • Communicate with families and staff regarding student medical needs.
  • Provide travel nurse support for all student athletics, activities, and events, with flexible hours to accommodate weekend or after-hours events.
  • Administer medication to day and dorm students and maintain proper documentation.
  • Maintain inventory of Health Center supplies.
  • Provide training for staff on medication administration and documentation.
  • Maintain student records and documentation.
  • Lead the development of individual health service plans when needed.
  • Participate in student and staff meetings when appropriate.
  • Ensure training for all staff working with students with medical needs or requiring medical intervention.
  • Engage in medically focused training to ensure up-to-date techniques and strengthen professional knowledge.
  • Supervise other staff providing medical services to students.
