About The Position

The school nurse identifies and treats health disorders among students and provides instruction in the maintenance for good health and disease prevention. The nurse must evaluate the physical conditions of students and refer students to appropriate resources as needed. Decisions made by the nurse require discretionary judgment and analysis. The position is 5.5 hours Monday through Friday according to the school calendar. The position is split between Mitchell High School and L. B. Williams Elementary School. Benefits are available with this position.

Evaluates the physical conditions of students
Refers students to appropriate resources as needed
Requires discretionary judgment and analysis for decisions

Responsibilities

Develops policies, procedures and work standards for school health program
Provides first aid care and medically prescribed services to students
Performs health screenings (vision, hearing, scoliosis, lice, weight, height …)
Coordinates referrals to community healthcare providers
Serves as liaisons between school personnel, family and community healthcare providers to ensure a healthy school environment
Develops plans for student care based on assessment, interventions and identification of outcomes and the evaluation of care
Serves as consultants with other school professionals, such as teachers, office staff, food services personnel and administrators
Provides health-related education to students and staff in both individual and group settings
Monitors immunizations, manage communicable diseases and assess the school environment as to prevent injury and ensure safety
Oversees infection control measures
Participates in school safety plans that address school violence, bullying and emergencies that may occur at school
Oversees medication administration, health care procedures and the development of healthcare plans
Monitors diabetic students care plans and care including blood sugar testing, meal planning/monitoring intake, calculating/administering insulin and follow up care
Makes decisions related to the delegation of healthcare tasks as directed by state laws, professional practice guidance and school district policies
Records immunizations, health findings, and other relevant health data
Maintains and assures confidentiality of information
Inventories and requests equipment and supplies needed in assigned buildings for health care
Maintains security of school health supplies
Provides health advice to school educational teams such as Individualized Educational Plan
Assists families with locating outside health care and obtaining health insurance
