About The Position

The School Nurse will monitor the medical needs of students, administer medications, and develop health care plans for students with health problems. This role involves administering and coordinating screenings, providing support for staff and students in the health and wellness curriculum, and ensuring compliance with District procedures and protocols. The nurse will maintain the school-based health clinic, administer first aid, document nursing interventions, and maintain student health records. Key responsibilities include identifying students with chronic illnesses, preparing Individual Health Care Plans, monitoring immunizations, completing injury and workers' comp reports, performing screenings, administering medication, and ordering clinic supplies. The position also requires attending in-service programs, maintaining EMS support capability, and pursuing professional growth.

Requirements

  • Current, valid LPN or RN certification
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, school personnel and parents
  • Ability to maintain a cooperative, harmonious relationship within the school setting which fosters recognition and respect for every individual
  • Ability to 'catch on' or understand instructions and underlying principles and ability to reason and make judgments
  • Ability to understand meanings of words and the ideas associated with them
  • Ability to perform arithmetic operations quickly and accurately
  • Ability to understand and interpret information which may be presented in the form of graphs, charts, or tables

Responsibilities

  • Monitor the medical needs of students and administer medications.
  • Develop health care plans for students with health problems.
  • Administer and/or coordinate screenings (e.g. vision, hearing, etc.) of students.
  • Provide support for staff and students in the health and wellness curriculum.
  • Ensure compliance with procedures, protocols, and other instructions provided by the District or Supervisor of Coordinated School Health.
  • Maintain the school-based health clinic and telemedicine.
  • Administer first aid and care to ill or injured students and staff as stipulated by District policies and procedures.
  • Document nursing interventions on computer software.
  • Provide reports as required by Coordinated School Health.
  • Maintain up-to-date cumulative health records on all students and record data on PowerSchool.
  • Identify students with chronic illnesses, conditions which could result in emergency care and those students who will self-administer and self-monitor medications and/or procedures while at school.
  • Prepare Individual Health Care Plans on those students with chronic illness or that require self-administration and self-monitoring of medications and/or procedures while at school.
  • Assume responsibility for monitoring student immunizations as required by law.
  • Assume responsibility for ensuring completion of student and staff injury reports.
  • Assume responsibility for completion of faculty/staff workers’ comp documentation.
  • Perform vision and hearing screening as needed with appropriate follow-up.
  • Administer medication to students according to District policies and guidelines.
  • Keep principal informed of any health-related issues in the school community.
  • Order supplies for the clinic through the Coordinated School Health Office.
  • Attend nursing in-service programs.
  • Maintain capability of securing EMS support via 911.
  • Assume responsibility for professional growth.
  • Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the principal and/or nursing supervisor.
