About The Position

This posting is intended to generate a pool of qualified applicants who wish to be considered for vacancies as they develop for the 2026-2027 school year. The School Nurse enhances the educational process by modifying or removing health-related barriers to learning and by promoting an optimal level of wellness. This role provides skilled nursing care to medically fragile children.

Requirements

  • Valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse.
  • Minimum of one year of nursing experience in a school setting or three years experience as a Registered Nurse.
  • Current certification in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and first aid from a recognized provider (e.g., American Heart Association).
  • Functional knowledge of current health issues and immunizations as they relate to school-age children.
  • Knowledge of student instruction and management practices, procedures, and techniques.
  • General knowledge of school system rules and procedures for classroom, halls, cafeteria, library, and transportation.
  • Ability to guide, direct, teach, and counsel students.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability and skill to make physical, social, and emotional assessments requiring professional nursing knowledge and judgment.
  • Ability to do basic keyboarding skills.
  • Contacts with students, parents, and staff may be non-cooperative and require diplomacy, skillful and thoughtful debate, tact, and confidentiality.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in nursing.
  • Three years experience as a Registered Nurse working with school-aged children.

Responsibilities

  • Provides skilled nursing care to medically fragile children.
  • Assists sick or injured students and staff, performs routine and emergency first aid.
  • Administers medication to appropriate students with parental permission and a doctor's order.
  • Maintains student health records, reviews records of entering students for immunizations, and ensures all components of School Health Entrance Requirement are complete.
  • Trains staff to administer medications under certain circumstances in the nurse's absence or for field trips.
  • Ensures proper documentation and maintains a record of CPR, First Aid trained staff.
  • Refers additional health concerns as appropriate to guidance counselors, school psychologists, physicians, Child Protective Services, school administrators, health department officials, and school 504 Coordinators.
  • Administers individual mandated screening of vision and hearing, height, weight, dental/oral, and scoliosis.
  • Completes necessary forms and procedures for bloodborne pathogen exposure incidents and situations related to Workers Compensation.
  • Serves as a member of the School Crisis and Child Study Team.
  • Participates in wellness programs for staff, inservice education, and attends all regularly scheduled staff meetings.
  • Supplies and adequately maintains the school clinic, checks first aid supplies and equipment daily, and secures medications.
  • Provides immunizations as dictated by the School Board.
  • Manages outbreaks of infectious illnesses by utilizing knowledge of infectious illness processes.
  • Notifies appropriate staff members of students with health concerns, provides necessary in-service training and/or emergency care plans.
  • Compiles a list of students with health problems and appropriately distributes it to administration and other school personnel.
  • Serves as a liaison with the public health department, health care providers, and other community agencies.
  • Ensures compliance with the law that all schools with at least one student with diabetes have at all times two staff members trained in the administration of insulin and glucagon.
  • May develop or assist with the development of Individual Health Care Plans for students with medical conditions, including allergies.
  • Ensures compliance with all laws protecting the confidentiality of medical information and obtains written consent of parent/guardian to share information.
  • Performs clerical duties requiring the use of computers, typing, filing, and duplicating related to school nurse functions.
  • Assists in enforcing rules and discipline and performs student supervision duties as required.
  • Advises administrators regarding appropriate interventions to meet student needs.
  • Advises administrators, teachers, and cafeteria staff regarding all students with food allergies.
  • Performs related work as required.
