About The Position

The job of Nurse is done for the purpose/s of overseeing the individual health needs of students; implementing student health care plans and physician orders; ensuring district health care practices comply with the laws relating to school nursing practice; providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured students; and serving as a health care resource to teachers, staff, and administrators; conducting recommended health screenings and identifying health problems for referral to appropriate parties for proper follow up treatment.

Requirements

  • Current, valid unrestricted licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of South Carolina; must maintain current certification in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR/AED) from a recognized provider (e.g. American Heart Association)
  • Must have and maintain a valid Driver’s License or ability to provide own transportation
  • May be required to travel to school district buildings and professional meetings
  • Prior to beginning employment, negative tb test results will be required
  • Knowledge to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions.
  • Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job including basic nursing skills, health standards and hazards.
  • Skills to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
  • Ability to use clinic/medical equipment; possess basic pharmacological knowledge.
  • Ability to assess emergency situations and act accordingly.
  • Knowledge of universal precautions/procedures and ability to teach others.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer and related software and standard office equipment.
  • Willing attitude to be a part of the school team; strong sense of professionalism; other skills and requirements expected by the nursing supervisor and the school administrator include management and organizational ability, common sense, motivation and positive attitude.
  • Familiar with the South Carolina Nurse Practice Act and the National Association of School Nurse’s scope standards of school nursing practice.
  • Ability to work independently, with limited supervision.
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff, district employees and the school community.
  • Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include communicating with diverse groups; to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; gather, collate, and/or classify data; maintain confidentiality; meeting deadlines and schedules; setting priorities; working as part of a team; and working with frequent interruptions.
  • Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances;
  • Basic computer skills required, keyboarding proficient
  • Applicants must submit official transcripts, three professional references with at least one supervisory reference and a copy of the appropriate credentials as part of the application process. Nursing License and BLS certification.
  • As a condition of employment and prior to onboarding, the district will conduct a criminal history background check. The recommended candidate will be required to provide personal information necessary to complete the background check such as date of birth, gender, and race to remain in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum of two years’ recent nursing experience in pediatrics, school nursing, public health nursing, or emergency/critical care nursing preferred.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains the school Health Room
  • Responds to emergency situations for the purpose of addressing immediate medical and safety concerns.
  • Administers first aid and care for ill or injured students and staff following state regulations and district policies and procedures.
  • Document nursing interventions and treatment on computer software supplied by Nursing Services.
  • Provides reports as required by Nursing Services.
  • Maintains up-to-date cumulative Health records on all students.
  • Identifies students with chronic illnesses, students whose conditions could result in emergency care, and students who will self-administer and self-monitor medications and/or procedures while at school.
  • The RN (School Nurse) prepares Individual Health Care Plans and/or Emergency Action Plans on those students with chronic illness, students with conditions that could result in an emergency, and students who self-administer/ self-monitor medications and/or procedures while at school.
  • Implement and educate school staff on student health care plans for the purpose of providing appropriate care.
  • Assesses situations involving students' safety, abuse (physical, sexual, drug) and other health related issues for the purpose of identifying problems, providing referral for proper treatment and complying with legal requirements as mandated reporters.
  • Assumes responsibility for monitoring student immunizations required by law and completing a 45-day immunization report required by SCDPH.
  • Performs Vision and Hearing screening as recommended by the State and school district, appropriate follow-up.
  • Administers medication to students according to District policies and guidelines always adhering to LLR Nursing Board Guidelines and SC Nurse Practice Act.
  • Collaborating with parents, students, health care providers, and/or other agencies for the purpose of promoting needed or prescribed treatment, refers to students requiring further medical attention and complying with legal requirements.
  • Participate in a variety of meetings, workshops and seminars, including IEP/504, for the purpose of sharing information and/or improving skills/knowledge.
  • Observes and reports regularly to the Director of Nursing on identified health problems of students that deviate from the applicable plan of care.
  • Collaborate with the Director for further instructions in revision of the Students Individual Health Care Plan.
  • Completes UAP (Unlicensed Assistive Personnel) training on medication administration when applicable for field trips and when there is no RN at school.
  • UAP training follows the guidelines established by the LLR Nursing Board in Opinions established related to school health.
  • Keeps the school principal and appropriate staff informed of any health-related problems and/or injuries at school requiring immediate care by EMS or parent pick up.
  • Reports outbreaks of communicable diseases to the nursing supervisor.
  • Adheres to the SC Exclusion Laws established by SC DPH.
  • Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the principal and/or nursing supervisor keeping duties to students in the health room as a priority.
  • Maintains capability of securing EMS support via 911.
  • working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others.
  • Utilization of resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions.
  • Attends all nursing in-service programs provided by Nursing Services.
  • Recognizes the need for specific competencies for required procedures based on student population
  • Assumes responsibility for professional growth by completing 30 hours of LLR Board approved nursing continuing education every two years. A requirement of South Carolina Licensure.
