About The Position

Fort HealthCare is seeking a School Nurse to join their School Nursing team with the Whitewater Area School District. This role is responsible for planning, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating school health services to maintain and/or improve the health status of students and staff, enabling them to fully benefit from the educational experience. The school nurse addresses chronic and/or acute health problems, ensures compliance with Federal and State Laws and Standards, and provides care to sick and injured individuals. Key functions include maintaining health documentation, performing medical procedures, reviewing health education content, providing preventive and screening services, health promotion, and immunization oversight. The role also involves staff education and training for emergency situations, first aid, CPR, AED use, bloodborne pathogens, communicable diseases, medication administration, and student-specific issues. Additionally, the School Nurse may provide skilled nursing interventions for a range of health conditions and may delegate duties to health aides or other trained staff. This position requires functioning independently as the only licensed healthcare provider in the district at times.

Requirements

  • Associate Degree in Nursing plus Public/Community Health Nursing Course as outlined by the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) required
  • At least 2 years nursing practice in Acute care and/or Pediatrics.
  • If ADN, expectation of completion of Public/Community Health Course within six months of employment required
  • Possesses excellent clinical assessment and nursing skills, clinical judgment, and problem-solving skills.
  • Able to effectively apply the nursing process to the school setting.
  • Specialized knowledge and understanding of Pediatrics and school-age growth and development including health needs.
  • Able to communicate verbally and in writing with individuals with diverse learning skills, reading abilities, and comprehension. Able to recognize and respond to non-verbal cues and communication. Able to adapt communication skills for all ages.
  • Able to complete required clinical documentations and reports in legible handwriting or computer utilizing acceptable standards of medical definitions and abbreviations.
  • Ability to read, speak, write, and understand English well.
  • Have ability to perform cognitive processes to interpret student data and condition and contact physician with changes.
  • Function independently without direct supervision.
  • Ability to apply appropriate nursing and/or emergency procedures within the scope of nursing license and physician orders if needed for the procedure; ability to operate computer software programs; ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and work with fractions; adaptability to change; ability to cope with stress; ability to prioritize work and effectively manage time.

  • Able to exceed expectations of students, staff, and parents with customer service and skills required
  • Current Wisconsin Nursing license, valid Wisconsin driver's license, current auto insurance, BLS Certification-must be able to complete upon hire required

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or higher preferred
  • School Nurse experience, Public Health nursing experience, NCSN certification.
  • If ADN obtaining BSN within 5 years of initiation of employment preferred
  • NCSN certification preferred

Responsibilities

  • Administration of School Health Program: Addresses system-wide health services issues, coordinates and participates in the establishment, review, and implementation of school health services, emergency health, and crisis plan policies and procedures. Develops and reviews school nurse budget for the district's School Health Services and bills third-party payers for qualifying services.
  • Care Provider: Provides assistance and addresses the health care needs of sick and injured students and staff. Develops a process to identify students with known chronic illness and special health needs. Creates comprehensive Individualized Health Plans (IHP) and develops Emergency Action Plans (EAP) as appropriate. Provides invasive procedure-delegation training and follow-up, and instructs school personnel on managing students with chronic illness.
  • Community Collaborator and Advocate: Functions as the liaison between the school and local health service agencies and medical providers. Interprets health mandates, recommendations, and trends. Collaborates with other student services personnel to prevent health problems from becoming reasons for educational failure. Reports immunization data to the county health agency.
  • Educator and Health Counseling: Provides education and health counseling to school staff, students, and families. Provides staff education and training for responding to emergency situations, first aid, CPR, AED use, bloodborne pathogens, communicable disease, and student-specific issues. Develops and conducts in-service training for school personnel on health issues. Provides consultant services to classroom teachers and assists with health instruction. Develops and trains staff in health services, including medication administration. Coordinates the establishment of guidelines, procedures, and training in First Aid/CPR/First Responder Program.
  • School Health Knowledge: Plans and coordinates screening programs including vision, hearing, dental, and kindergarten entrance. Detects health problems through observations, interviews, and analysis of records. Establishes communication channels among school staff for referral and follow-through on pupil health problems.
  • Skills/Procedures: Competently performs, teaches, and delegates nursing procedures including medication administration, injury management, and illness management. Provides staff training, competency evaluation, supervision, and consultation on medication administration. Performs skilled nursing interventions for various acute and chronic conditions. Keeps current in nursing specialty and career skills. Represents Fort HealthCare in meetings and events. Completes department-specific orientation and annual competencies.
