About The Position

DeKalb County Central United School District is seeking a School Nurse at McKenney-Harrison Elementary. The role involves providing basic health services to students, assisting in the planning and implementation of school health programs, evaluating student health status, and serving as a resource for student health management. The nurse will work to remove health-related barriers to learning and collaborate with various stakeholders to support student well-being.

Requirements

  • Completion of a registered nurse program.
  • Possession of a registered nurse license.
  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator license.
  • Knowledge of the principles, methods, techniques, strategies, and trends in educational health services.
  • Knowledge of applicable health appraisal methods and techniques and procedures.
  • Familiarity with the social service and health service agencies in the local area.
  • Understanding of the social, emotional, and behavioral characteristics of student clients.
  • Experience with health services program evaluation and research techniques, strategies, and procedures.
  • Experience with appropriate curriculum and instructional programs pertaining to student health education.
  • Ability to assist students in effectively dealing with health issues, problems, and concerns.
  • Ability to effectively work with site and district personnel, parents, social service, and youth service agencies in resolving student health problems and concerns.
  • Ability to effectively participate in the planning and implementation of health instructional processes.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective organizational, public, and community relationships.

Responsibilities

  • Provide basic health services to students.
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of school health programs.
  • Evaluate the health status of students and the health service program.
  • Provide instruction in health practices, first aid, and child care.
  • Serve as a resource pertaining to student health management strategies and welfare and attendance problems and concerns.
  • Facilitate the educational process by removing health-related barriers to learning.
  • Participate in planning programs that eliminate or minimize health problems of students that may interfere with learning.
  • Initiate, maintain, and annually review student health records.
  • Assist with training and education of paraprofessionals in proper techniques for medical treatments or procedures.
  • Identify health problems of students through health assessment, health histories, review of health records, and screening programs.
  • Implement all screening programs and prepare annual reports mandated by Indiana law (Vision and Hearing).
  • Communicate current health problems, needs, and concerns of students to their parents and appropriate school staff.
  • Assist in the identification of students with disabilities and interpret health factors pertinent to the student’s disability.
  • Develop and maintain a system for providing first aid and emergency care.
  • Administer medications and treatments to students per physician’s order and parent authorization.
  • Provide health counseling to students to assist them in making decisions regarding their health and health behaviors.
  • Assist students and parents in identifying and utilizing available and appropriate community health resources.
  • Facilitate the attainment of students’ health needs by providing support to students and their families.
  • Provide educational opportunities for students to assist them in developing self-care skills to deal with health problems.
  • Provide in-service educational opportunities for school staff on health-related issues.
  • Collaborate with community agencies, health professionals, and school staff to identify the health needs of children and youth.
  • Work with school building administrators in collecting and maintaining immunization records.
  • Provide classroom instruction to students on health related issues as specified by the Superintendent of Schools.
  • Conduct lice checks on an as needed basis.
  • Provide human sexuality instruction at the elementary level.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the District Nurse.
