About The Position

The School Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for administering first aid, conducting health screenings, maintaining student medical records, and providing nursing care for accidents, illnesses, and preventive medicine. This role involves referring students to appropriate resources, managing medications and treatments, and communicating with community health agencies. The nurse will also conduct training for students, parents, and staff, provide recommendations on school health programs, and ensure compliance with state and federal laws and district policies. Additionally, the nurse will utilize technology for record-keeping, make home visits, maintain medical supplies, and participate in health defect screenings. The position requires staying current with medical advances and public health issues, providing health education, and acting as a liaison and advocate for students and families. The nurse will work independently following district guidelines, attend meetings for students with medical needs, and delegate health responsibilities as permitted. The role is evaluated by the Director of Student Services with input from Building Principals, and employment terms are based on district salary schedules.

Requirements

  • Diploma and certification as Registered Nurse (RN)
  • One year comprehensive nursing experience
  • Transportation Availability as may include positions requiring itinerant travel
  • Strictly adheres to the Kentucky Certified Code of Ethics (704 KAR 20:680) expected for all certified and classified personnel
  • Work is performed while standing, sitting and/or walking
  • Requires the ability to communicate effectively using speech, vision, written language, and hearing
  • Requires the use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulations
  • Requires the ability to lift, carry, push or pull light objects and students up to 25 lbs.

Responsibilities

  • Administers first aid according to established procedures.
  • Conducts a variety of health screenings, including height, weight, vision, hearing, and scoliosis.
  • Prepares and maintains accurate student medical records, including immunization and updated student records.
  • Administers first aid or nursing care for accidents, seizures, preventive medicine, and educational-related medical issues.
  • Provides screening for head lice and observes students regularly to detect health needs.
  • Refers students to appropriate personnel, resources, or clinics and follows up as necessary.
  • Maintains health records and medical logs.
  • Updates immunization and student records as needed.
  • Prepares and submits periodical medical reports for appropriate organizations or District personnel.
  • Assures compliance with established laws and regulations.
  • Dispenses and retains medication and performs medical treatment in accordance with physician's instructions within District guidelines.
  • Communicates with various community health agencies and civic organizations to exchange information, coordinate activities, and obtain student needs.
  • Conducts training for students, parents, and school staff as permitted and required.
  • Provides information and makes recommendations to principals and district administrators regarding health issues of students and school health program needs.
  • Develops programs to meet school health needs.
  • Follows all appropriate state and federal laws as well as district policies and procedures.
  • Utilizes technology, including the student information system, to maintain records.
  • Makes home visits as required.
  • Authorizes re-admission to school.
  • Maintains stock of first aid supplies.
  • Assures medical equipment is in proper working condition.
  • Orders supplies and equipment as needed.
  • Participates in screening for health defects and sanitary conditions in schools.
  • Maintains current knowledge of medical advances and information, public health issues, and treatment procedures.
  • Provides health care teaching—preventive and therapeutic—appropriate to educational level and language barriers.
  • Provides case management by acting as a liaison between parent/guardian and physician responsible for the student’s health condition.
  • Participates as a student/family advocate.
  • Works independently following district guidelines.
  • Attends and provides input at ARC & 504 meetings of students with medical needs, as necessary.
  • Delegates health responsibilities as permitted.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
  • Performs any other job assigned by principal, director of student services, superintendent, and/or designee.
