About The Position

The successful candidate will provide health services and assist in implementing health related policies/procedures within the school. This is an 11-month position which includes training prior to the beginning of the new school year and summer program(s). Evening and weekend hours are required, with a shift of Sunday - Thursday from 1pm - 9pm. The role requires upholding professional standards of the state Nurse Practice Act, collecting health information, maintaining immunization records, providing health appraisals, routine care, First Aid, and emergency care. Medication administration, instruction, counseling, and guidance on health-related issues are key responsibilities. The nurse will serve as a liaison between medical offices, hospitals, parents, students, and the Medical Review Officer. Responsibilities also include drug testing, reporting suspected child abuse, assisting with communicable disease control policies, participating in team meetings and parental conferences, scheduling medical appointments, ordering medical supplies, and being available by phone after hours. Maintaining confidentiality of student information and communicating effectively with administration, faculty, staff, students, and the general public are essential. The role also involves providing medication administration, CPR, First Aid, and other relevant training to staff and faculty, and implementing the mission, goals, and policies of the Alabama School of Mathematics and Science. Computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office, web-based programs, social media networks, and email, is required for communication and documentation. The nurse will also serve on ASMS committees as assigned, support the school’s Mission, Vision, and Values, and track data for reporting purposes. Compliance with ASMS Board of Directors policies and procedures, maintaining a coachable spirit, strong communication skills, ability to work effectively with others, multi-task in a fast-paced environment, follow instructions, dress appropriately, and maintain a professional demeanor are expected. Knowledge of adolescent behavior is also important.

Requirements

Licensed as a registered nurse by the Alabama Board of Nursing.
2 years of experience.
Computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office, web-based programs, social media networks, and email as a primary mode of communication/documentation.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Ability to work effectively with others.
Ability to multi-task effectively in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to follow instructions, both oral and written.
Must remain courteous and professional at all times.
Knowledge of adolescent behavior.

Responsibilities

Uphold professional standards of the state Nurse Practice Act.
Collect health information about the student’s past and present health history.
Responsible for maintaining current immunization record upon student’s entering ASMS.
Provide health appraisals/assessments of students.
Provide health services including routine care, First Aid, and emergency care.
Medication administration according to State Law.
Provide relevant instruction, counseling, and guidance to students, parents, staff and others concerning health-related issues.
