About The Position

The Lansing School District is seeking a dedicated School Nurse to serve students across its 25 PreK-12 school buildings. The school nurse will provide professional nursing services to general and special education students, offering routine health care, case management, and emergency care. Responsibilities include developing emergency and medical care plans, assisting students and families with accessing resources, coordinating communicable disease management, providing staff training, overseeing the AED program, and conducting health and wellness activities. The nurse will also participate in student planning meetings, such as IEPs, and collaborate within a nurse team to promote health and prevent disease for all students.

Requirements

• Valid Michigan license to practice as a Registered Nurse.
• Bachelor’s degree required.
• Current interim, standard, or professional school nurse certificate issued by the State Board of Education or be immediately eligible for one of the three categories of certification.
• Minimum of 2 years of professional nursing experience in school nursing, pediatric nursing or a related field.

Responsibilities

• Develop emergency care plans for students with acute and chronic health conditions.
• Develop medical care plans for students with chronic health conditions.
• Assist students and families with access to school and community resources to improve health and remove barriers to school attendance and performance.
• Provide coordination of communicable disease in schools including health department reporting, case management, and prevention services.
• Provide staff training, coordinate the school Medical Response Team, oversee the AED program, and provide annual training for medication administration, emergency medication administration, and a wide variety of health and wellness activities.
• Participate in IEP team meetings, the development of behavior management plans, and other student plans to improve student success.
• Function within the Nurse team to provide a wide range of health promotion, disease prevention, and coordination of care for all students within their assigned school(s).
• Serve as liaison between home, school, and health care providers.
• Provide classroom instruction regarding health and wellness, prevention, and health promotion strategies.
• Monitor administration of daily and emergency medication at school.
• Monitor and ensure compliance with district medication policies.
• Oversee the distribution, maintenance, and staff training for emergency medications such as Narcan, Epi-pen.
• Provide staff training for a wide variety of medical conditions and needs.
• Provide training for Medical Emergency Response Teams in each school.
• Ensure compliance with state-mandated immunization requirements including monitoring, referrals, follow-up, and hosting immunization clinics.
• Follow up with families whose children fail the state-mandated vision and hearing screenings at school.
• Follow up with families whose children fail the dental screenings.
• Provide hands-on skilled Nursing assessment and care for routine illness, accident, and injury at school.
• Assist families with obtaining primary care for their children in the community.
• Direct oversight for medical assistants assigned to their schools.
• Participate in IEPs and student planning at assigned schools.
• Make district-wide referrals for various needs and services (FORT, behavioral support, counseling, etc.).
• Oversee the distribution of Weekend Survival kits at assigned schools.
• Provide routine care, service, and support in school nurse-managed health clinics in school.
• Other duties as assigned.
