The school librarian provides instructional leadership in teaching information literacy skills, develops and maintains a school library collection of current digital and print materials and technology, curates openly licensed educational resources, and manages the library as a flexible, multi-purpose learning environment. The librarian collaborates with faculty and administrators to develop a program that supports the instructional curriculum. The role includes teaching students and teachers to locate, access, evaluate, use, and communicate information; maintaining print, non-print, and electronic collections; managing circulation of curricular support materials and equipment; and collaborating with teachers to plan assignments and instruction in digital learning, participatory learning, inquiry learning, technology literacies, and information literacy. The librarian selects and orders collection materials, introduces instructional materials and technologies to staff, supervises library assistants and volunteers, and plans literacy projects and motivational reading initiatives. The librarian prepares or assists with the library budget, assesses student learning and adjusts instruction to meet group and individual needs, and uses the district curriculum and National School Library Standards to plan instruction. The position generates circulation and budget reports and other reports requested by the building principal or district library services specialist. It operates and provides instruction on computer and electronic equipment in various formats. The role requires independent decision-making within its area of responsibility, with supervisor approval for decisions extending beyond that scope or affecting fiscal policies and procedures. The school library is the normal work environment, with a moderate noise level and some likely exposure to dust and mold. The position requires the ability to sit and stand for extended periods, use a telephone and computer, read screen and printed materials, hear and speak clearly, and bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk, and reach overhead. The position is scheduled for 8 hours per day and 205 days per year.
