Wake County Health and Human Services’ School Health Program provides services to 199 Wake County Public Schools. Each school nurse serves two schools, which may include preschool, elementary, middle, and/or high schools. Nurses spend two days per week at one school and three days per week at the other, working eight-hour days Monday through Friday and attending their assigned schools during regular school hours. Vacancies are in Morrisville and North Raleigh; each nurse serves two schools in one of those areas. The positions are full-time and year-round (12 months). The school nurse provides nursing assessment, develops and implements health care plans, and trains, delegates to, and supervises unlicensed assistive personnel. The nurse consults with school staff on student health issues, coordinates care for students with chronic health conditions, conducts vision rescreening and follow-up, participates in IEP/504 meetings for students with identified medical needs, identifies students who may benefit from School Health Services, and collaborates with school staff, physicians, families, and community partners to secure services. Influenza immunization is a condition of initial and continued employment for employees working in Health Clinics and Public Health, including School Health, subject to compliance with federal law. Employees must also participate in department emergency preparedness and response activities, which may involve temporary changes to responsibilities and working hours. In an emergency, employees may be assigned temporarily to a different role, work schedule, or location and may be required to participate in preparedness exercises and training. The position is based at the Public Health Building in Raleigh, North Carolina, with a hybrid schedule based on public school bell schedules.
