About The Position

The Office of School Health's Medical Unit's physicians provide legally mandated services based upon Health Code 49-05(b), which states that New York City Schools are required to have physician supervision for all schools. School Health physicians support children residing in all boroughs, prioritizing communities with the highest prevalence of pediatric chronic diseases and disabilities. This support is achieved through the provision of direct clinical services and case management. The physician will collaborate with community medical providers to support students with special health care needs and/or chronic diseases, such as diabetes, and through review of medical accommodations, care coordination, and care protocol development. The Office of School Health (OSH) is a joint program of the Department of Education and the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, responsible for promoting the health of 1.3 million school-aged children in approximately 1,800 public and non-public schools across New York City. OSH provides mandated clinical services, public health initiatives, chronic disease management, reproductive health care, and case management to ensure that students are healthy and ready to learn. Physicians in OSH also review medical accommodations, respond to public health emergencies, and coordinate with community providers to support the health and safety of students.

Requirements

• Possession of a valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York
• Valid Board Certification issued by the appropriate American Specialty Board in any specialty area required by the agency; or Current approved application on file for admission to the certifying examination given by the appropriate American Specialty Board in any specialty area required by the agency.
• One year of satisfactory experience practicing in the specialty area (to be assigned to Assignment Level II).
• A valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York (to be assigned to Assignment Level III).
• A Master's degree in Public Health, or equivalent Master's degree, including or supplemented by graduate credits in epidemiology and biostatistics. Completion of Epidemic Intelligence Service program of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention may be used to substitute for this Master's degree (to be assigned to Assignment Level III).
• At least two years of satisfactory experience after receipt of the Master's degree, or equivalent, in the practice of epidemiology. Specialty Board Certification or eligibility may be substituted for one year of this experience (to be assigned to Assignment Level III).
• A valid license to practice medicine in the State of New York (to be assigned to Assignment Level IV).
• Completion of an approved residency program in an accredited hospital, including three years of experience, in either internal medicine, or family practice, or pediatrics, or another related specialty area required by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (to be assigned to Assignment Level IV).
• Valid board certification or board eligibility issued by the appropriate American Subspecialty Board in Infectious Disease, Pulmonary Medicine, or a related subspecialty (to be assigned to Assignment Level IV).
• Completion of an approved fellowship program in an accredited hospital, including two years of experience, in either infectious diseases, or pulmonary medicine, or another related subspecialty required by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (to be assigned to Assignment Level IV).

Responsibilities

• Work within the mandates, policies and protocols of the Office of School Health.
• Attend to the health needs and medical issues specific of all students in a designated school community
• Utilize the Automated Student Health Record (ASHR) to maintain accurate student health records.
• Complete medical accommodation reviews efficiently, using sound clinical judgment, coordinating services when appropriate
• Perform mandated physical examinations (New Admission Exams, Sports Physicals, and Working Paper Physicals).
• Participate in meetings concerning student medical needs at school.
• Implement initiatives that promote positive health behaviors
• Support the development of school educational and prevention programs specifically designed to promote the health and wellness of students.
• Provide clinical assistance in the event of an environmental or communicable disease occurrence.
• Function as a liaison for students with community health providers to medical issues that affect school performance.
• Support all medical initiatives established by the Office of School resolve Health, e.g. Asthma, Reproductive Health, Obesity, and Diabetes programs and protocols.
• Maintain good public relations and communicate effectively within the school community and community-based organizations.
• Keep abreast of health management policy statements and emerging clinical research related to school health.
• Participate in OSH research activities
• Attend all mandated DOHMH and OSH activities
• Attend all program meetings and Continuing Medical Education classes provided by the Office of School Health.
