About The Position

This position is part of the School Health team and functions as both a registration clerk and medical assistant. The role involves assisting with daily tasks such as registering patients, verifying insurance, tracking referrals, distributing medical record information, assisting with financial assistance applications, and directing patients to community resources. Additionally, the position functions as a Medical Assistant, including giving injections, measuring vital signs, and ensuring exam rooms are stocked and clean. The role also supports school health nurses with various programs like school health, dental outreach, Head Start health programming, and medical outreach programming.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Current BLS Certification through American Heart Association or obtain within 30 days of hire.
  • Valid Driver’s License required.
  • Social and cultural sensitivity appropriate to ethnically and economically diverse patient-and employee-base.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the rationale of appropriate patient care.
  • Communicates through appropriate channels. Use proper chain of command for patient complaints.
  • Ability to handle emergency situations calmly and effectively.
  • Must be computer literate.
  • Must be able to maintain good inter-personal relationship with co-workers and other members of the health care team and the organization.
  • Provide customer service in accordance to the organization’s mission.
  • Be courteous and respectful when interacting with patients and family members.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance to organization’s policy and procedure and HIPAA requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Registers patients, verifies and enters insurance and demographic information, scans documents, and maintains accurate records in the EHR.
  • Manages patient appointments, monitors schedules, and ensures efficient patient flow through triage and oversight of the waiting area.
  • Obtains required consents, reappoints patients as needed, and communicates effectively with patients, parents, and school staff regarding appointments and care.
  • Assists patients with financial assistance applications and community resources, collects and posts patient payments, reconciles daily balances, and maintains cash control.
  • Tracks and coordinates referrals to consulting physicians, requests and distributes medical documentation, and ensures documentation is obtained for continuity of care.
  • Assists patients in identifying or applying for other coverage options such as marketplace insurance or community-based programs.
  • Obtains vital signs, updates medications and allergies, and assists providers in patient care, including administering injections, performing routine laboratory tests, and supporting specialty procedures as directed.
  • Prepares exam stations and treatment areas, maintains cleanliness and organization, and monitors medical supply inventory to ensure availability of materials.
  • Coordinates with school health nursing staff to support student health needs, enter student medical information into district systems, and facilitate access to school-based health clinic services.
  • Maintains flexibility to perform a variety of clinical, clerical, or nursing duties, including substituting for school nursing staff as scheduling permits.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
