School Health and Wellness Program Specialist
About The Position
The Teaching and Learning Section of the Utah State Board of Education is seeking a highly motivated and organized Program Specialist to provide critical operational and field support for the Gold Medal Schools program across rural Utah. This position, funded by the Rural Health and Transformation Program, focuses on providing direct technical assistance, executing program outreach, delivering established training, and supporting local compliance efforts within rural Local Education Agencies (LEAs). The Program Specialist acts as the primary day-to-day resource for participating schools, supporting the Education Specialist to ensure localized program success and continuous quality improvement. This position is Time-Limited with funding currently allocated for up to three (3) years.
Requirements
- A minimum of one (1) year of work experience in public education support, community health program administration, or operational coordination.
- Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
- Demonstrated skills in task organization, clear communication, collaborative teamwork, and the ability to operate reliably in a field-based setting.
Nice To Haves
- Bachelor’s degree or higher, preference in Health Education, Physical Education, Public Health, or a related field.
- Experience providing direct technical assistance or customer service within a public education or government framework.
- Experience using electronic grant management or data tracking platforms.
- Familiarity with Utah's rural geography and public school environments.
- Experience coordinating logistics, meetings, or field workshops.
Responsibilities
- Navigate and maintain the grant management platform to support schools through the application intake, action plan submission, and fund distribution processes.
- Review submitted local school reports, assessments, and action plans to verify completeness and initial alignment with program expectations, reporting timelines, and state requirements.
- Assist with field-level evaluation workflows, collecting local data and metrics to help measure overall program impact and identify implementation gaps.
- Coordinate the logistics for program materials, including auditing inventory, ordering, and distributing supplies, resources, and formal awards for Gold Medal Designations.
- Maintain active communication channels with enrolled rural schools, assisting local teams and working collaboratively with the School Health and Wellness Specialist and the Department of Health and Human Services field staff to support recruitment efforts.
- Represent the program at regional community events, school health fairs, and local meetings to distribute information and promote the practical benefits of the Gold Medal Schools framework.
- Coordinate logistics for, and deliver, pre-established professional learning opportunities and standardized training sessions for rural LEAs and elementary school staff.
- Distribute and guide school staff on the practical use of program toolkits, evidence-based nutrition resources, and implementation guides.
- Gather field-level metrics, milestones, and qualitative success stories from participating schools to support the development of agency-wide promotional and reporting materials.
- Disseminate approved best practices and successful wellness models directly to school teams to help strengthen local program effectiveness.
