About The Position

The School Health Aide assists in providing health services to students and staff under the direction of a supervising nurse. This role involves administering medications, providing basic healthcare, maintaining records, and ensuring a safe and healthy environment within the school setting. The position requires adherence to established standards of care and district policies.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED
• Basic healthcare training preferred
• Minimum 1 year in a health care setting preferred
• Certified in Adult and Pediatric CPR and First Aid
• Knowledge of universal precautions
• Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
• Basic computer skills
• Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
• Acceptable completion of district training as per skills list
• Basic data collection skills (e.g., vital signs)
• Proficiency in respiratory safety (e.g., nebulizers and inhalers)
• Proficiency in wound care (e.g., cleaning and dressing wounds)
• Proficiency in medication administration (e.g., oral, nasal, ophthalmic, otic, topical, gastrostomy tubes, emergency medications like Epi-pens, rectal Diastat, nasal versed, Glucagon)
• Knowledge of diabetes care per American Diabetes Association and Oklahoma State Department of Health guidelines and per student's physician orders
• Ability to perform delegated procedures including (but not limited to): urinary catheterization, colostomy care, gastrostomy tube care, gastrostomy tube feedings, oral suctioning
• Ability to use sound judgment in any situation
• Ability to receive and appropriately respond to directions of a Supervising Nurse and/or administrator
• Must be able to deal successfully and rapidly with changes in assignments and properly respond to complaints
• Must build harmonious rapport and work cooperatively with district staff, students and the public while achieving the objectives of the job
• Handles problematic and/or difficult situations by communicating to the appropriate person
• Able to be in attendance for assigned responsibilities with 95% attendance

Responsibilities

• Utilizes standards of care and first aid training in caring for students and staff, including collecting data, administering and documenting medications, and communicating with the supervising nurse.
• Provides care within the scope of practice and limitations of the position, utilizing appropriate problem-solving and performing approved job skills.
• Prioritizes and organizes completion of job responsibilities, responding in a timely manner to students, parents, and staff.
• Maintains accurate records, including documenting all services provided and utilizing appropriate computer and paper documentation systems.
• Supports health services goals through continuous quality improvement and educational activities, including attending meetings and contributing ideas.
• Participates appropriately in district safety activities, including maintaining emergency information and evacuation procedures.
• Maintains a safe and organized work environment and consults with the supervising nurse regarding any potentially hazardous situations.
