About The Position

This position serves as a primary contact supporting student success by fostering academic, behavioral, and social‑emotional growth for students working toward a high school equivalency diploma. The purpose of this position is to support and assist all offenders as they develop skills in the areas of educational planning and career development. The intent of this position is to provide information, instruction, and skills that support the instructional program in core subjects for students in an adult prison setting age 22 and under. This position is located within the academic school at Richmond Correctional Institution, Hoffman, NC (Richmond County). Reporting to the School Principal, the School Counselor is a core member of the education team responsible for implementing and monitoring the school’s vision, mission, values, and goals. The counselor must be able to organize and deliver counseling, support, transition services, and related educational programs to groups of student offenders of all ages, creating a flexible program and learning environment that supports each student’s abilities and personal growth within a male, medium-custody correctional facility. The counselor will also perform any additional duties assigned by the principal.

Requirements

  • A master’s degree or above (from an appropriately accredited college) in school counseling (or a related field)
  • Must hold a current State of North Carolina Professional Educator’s License (Class Code M, S, or D) with certification in the area of School Counselor or be eligible to obtain an Emergency or Provisional Certification or active licensure in the aforementioned certification area(s).
  • Eligibility requirements for the Emergency Licenses are: Emergency One-Year License Eligibility: the candidate must (1) hold a bachelor's degree with 18 hours of coursework relevant to the requested licensure area (but has not completed a recognized educator preparation program) and (2) does not qualify for a Residency License

Nice To Haves

  • Certification in multiple core subjects (e.g., math and science).
  • Experience in maintaining accurate records including, but not limited to, social and emotional skills, summative and formative performance, assessment results, and anecdotal notes
  • Experience conducting non-standardized education assessments according to accepted professional practices
  • Experience collaborating with teachers and staff to integrate guidance and counseling into the curriculum.
  • Experience in creating, maintaining, and providing oversight on the implementation of Section 504 plans
  • Experience communicating effectively with stakeholders, both orally and in writing.
  • Experience using technology productivity tools, software, and student information systems including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.).

Responsibilities

  • Developing and maintaining a comprehensive and effective data-driven school counseling program with interventions based on NC state standards
  • Providing individual and group counseling and classroom guidance addressing students’ personal, educational, and social challenges.
  • Collaborating with teachers and other staff to integrate guidance and counseling activities in the school curriculum
  • Helping interpret standardized test results, formative and summative assessment results, and other student data accurately and effectively.
  • Aggregating, disaggregating, and interpreting standardized test results, formative and summative assessment results, and student data accurately and effectively.
