About The Position

Provide academic instruction at the elementary school level for students who are deaf and hard of hearing in their primary mode of communication within a residential education setting.

Requirements

  • Effective sign language skills, receptive and expressive, in order to communicate with deaf students, employees, parents, and visitors.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, courteously, and tactfully with all people.
  • Dexterity skills to use sign language.
  • Mobility and endurance to keep up with students and their movements around campus.
  • Mobility and endurance to get down on and up off the floor with children if applicable and necessary.
  • Mobility and ability to assist children with hygiene needs if applicable and necessary.
  • Vision (with or without correction) within the normal functioning range for the purpose of reading and understanding sign language and for the purpose of supervising children.
  • Ability to express one’s intent as well as instruct others through the use of sign language.
  • Dexterity skills to use sign language.

Responsibilities

  • Provide academic instruction in reading, math, science, and other areas as needed, based on IEPs.
  • Implement assigned curricula and daily-prepared lessons.
  • Assess and document student progress and performance.
  • Plan instructional activities.
  • Prepare IEPs.
  • Attend to individual problems relating to student progress, performance, or behavior.
  • Prepare report cards.
  • Supervise and instruct teaching assistants.
  • Gather and/or prepare instructional materials.
  • Supervise student teachers and/or observers.
  • Participate in school-related activities.
  • Attend committee meetings and in-service workshops.
  • Plan and implement field trips.
  • Administer formal and informal tests/assessments.
  • Communicate with other programs (residential, student support, etc.) on & off campus.
  • Serve as liaison between residential and academic staff, academic staff and parents, and academic staff and local educational agencies.
  • Serve as a resource person for other schools.
  • Administer, proctor, compile, and submit any and all state-mandated tests, portfolios, & inventories, adhering to state policies/procedures for testing.
  • Have daily contact with supervisor concerning duties.
  • Handle office duties concerning daily bus duty or Friday bus duty.
  • Engage in daily student contact (giving out passes, getting students to appointments, getting information from students, etc.).
  • Disseminate information on daily/weekly/monthly reports.
  • Complete confidential information for other agencies.
  • Receive, compile, file, and disseminate information from other on and off-campus service providers.
  • Assist the supervisor in verifying and updating campus inventory.
  • Ensure IEP goals/objectives are implemented and documented appropriately.
  • Ensure students are safe at all times in all situations.
  • Report concerns related to safety (student or staff) to the supervisor.
  • Adhere to Directive 21 and attend appropriate sign language classes.
