About The Position

This position directs the work of subordinates in providing custodial services for a school. The role involves assigning, inspecting, and supervising the work of subordinates to ensure buildings and grounds are kept clean and orderly. The incumbent will perform difficult maintenance tasks on plumbing and electrical fixtures, and woodwork that do not require journey worker level trade skills. Responsibilities include supervising custodial staff in preparing for special school functions, managing the cleaning and operational maintenance of special school equipment like swimming pools and auditoriums, and supervising or participating in grounds maintenance such as propagating and cultivating plants and lawns. The role also involves requisitioning, receiving, storing, and being responsible for janitorial supplies and equipment, maintaining records of supplies and equipment, making reports on work accomplished and unusual happenings, and keeping daily time sheets. Security responsibility for the school, including managing 'night lights', is also a key duty. The position may involve supervising student help and operating power equipment like lawn mowers, and performing typical duties of lower-level custodians if necessary.

Requirements

  • Applicants must have at least 2 years of general experience and 2 years of supervisory experience.
  • General Experience includes progressively responsible work experience in janitorial or related custodial work, grounds maintenance work, or general laboring experience.
  • For School Custodian III, at least one year of the work experience must have been comparable in nature and scope to that of a School Custodian in the State service.
  • Applicants must have demonstrated evidence of supervisory aptitude.
  • Supervisory aptitude can be demonstrated through successful completion of assignments with supervisory responsibilities, details to supervisory positions, completion of supervisory training courses, or favorable appraisals indicating supervisory potential.

Responsibilities

  • Directs work of subordinates in providing custodial services for a school.
  • Assigns, lays out, inspects and supervises the work of subordinates to insure that buildings and grounds areas are kept in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Performs the more difficult maintenance work to plumbing and electrical fixtures and to woodwork not requiring journey worker level trade skills.
  • Supervises custodial staff in preparing for special school functions.
  • Has charge of cleaning and operational maintenance of special school equipment such as swimming pools, auditoriums and loud speaker systems.
  • Supervises or participates in the propagation and cultivation of flowers, plants and lawns.
  • Requisitions, receives, stores and is responsible for janitorial supplies and equipment for the school assigned and takes periodic inventories of such supplies and equipment.
  • Maintains records of supplies dispensed and of equipment issued.
  • Makes reports on work accomplished and of unusual happenings or accidents.
  • Keeps daily time sheets.
  • Has security responsibility for the school.
  • Turns "night lights" on and off at proper hours.
  • May supervise student help when assigned.
  • May operate power equipment such as power lawn mowers.
  • May perform the typical duties of lower level custodians if necessary.
