About The Position

This position directs the work of subordinates in providing custodial services for a school. The role involves assigning, inspecting, and supervising the work of subordinates to ensure buildings and grounds are kept clean and orderly. The School Custodian III also performs more difficult maintenance tasks on plumbing, electrical fixtures, and woodwork that do not require journey-level trade skills. Additionally, this role supervises custodial staff in preparing for special school functions and is responsible for the cleaning and operational maintenance of special school equipment such as swimming pools and auditoriums. The position may also supervise or participate in grounds maintenance, including the propagation and cultivation of plants and lawns. Requisitioning, receiving, storing, and maintaining an inventory of janitorial supplies and equipment are key responsibilities, along with maintaining records of supplies and equipment, and making reports on work accomplished and any unusual happenings or accidents. Security for the school is a primary responsibility, including managing lighting. The role may involve supervising student help and operating power equipment like lawn mowers. If necessary, the School Custodian III may perform the typical duties of lower-level custodians.

Requirements

  • Progressively responsible work experience in one or a combination of the following areas: (a) Janitorial or related custodial work such as sweeping, dusting and cleaning of buildings; (b) Grounds maintenance work experience including such activities as cleaning, watering, fertilizing, trimming, mowing, sweeping and raking; (c) General laboring experience such as moving materials, furniture and equipment; loading and unloading trucks; carrying, unloading and stacking tools and supplies for skilled craftsman; and digging trenches and ditches.
  • For School Custodian III, at least one year of the work experience must have been comparable in nature and scope to that of a School Custodian in the State service.
  • For the School Custodian III level, applicants must have demonstrated evidence of supervisory aptitude.
  • Supervisory aptitude is the demonstration of aptitude or potential for the performance of supervisory duties through successful completion of regular or special assignments which involve some supervisory responsibilities or aspects; by details to supervisory positions; by completion of training courses in supervision accompanied by application of supervisory skills in assignments; or by favorable appraisals of a supervisor indicating the possession of supervisory potential.
  • Applicants must meet all the requirements for the position they are seeking as of the date of the application, unless otherwise specified.
  • Unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience may not be gained concurrently.
  • Calculation of experience is based on full-time, 40-hour workweeks. Part-time experience is pro-rated.
  • Claims of Temporary Assignment (TA) experience to meet the minimum qualification requirements must be verified and attached to the application using one of the options below: A copy of the applicant’s TA History Report or equivalent system-generated report; A signed letter from the applicant’s supervisor that includes the applicant’s name, his/her TA job title, the TA start and end dates (from mm/yy to mm/yy), his/her specific TA duties performed, and either the TA hours worked per week or total TA hours worked; or, Copies of the applicant’s signed SF-10 Forms.

Responsibilities

  • Assigns, lays out, inspects and supervises the work of subordinates to insure that buildings and grounds areas are kept in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Performs the more difficult maintenance work to plumbing and electrical fixtures and to woodwork not requiring journey worker level trade skills.
  • Supervises custodial staff in preparing for special school functions.
  • Has charge of cleaning and operational maintenance of special school equipment such as swimming pools, auditoriums and loud speaker systems.
  • Supervises or participates in the propagation and cultivation of flowers, plants and lawns.
  • Requisitions, receives, stores and is responsible for janitorial supplies and equipment for the school assigned and takes periodic inventories of such supplies and equipment.
  • Maintains records of supplies dispensed and of equipment issued.
  • Makes reports on work accomplished and of unusual happenings or accidents.
  • Keeps daily time sheets.
  • Has security responsibility for the school.
  • Turns "night lights" on and off at proper hours.
  • May supervise student help when assigned.
  • May operate power equipment such as power lawn mowers.
  • May perform the typical duties of lower level custodians if necessary.
