About The Position

This role is responsible for ensuring the safe passage of pedestrian traffic, rendering aid and assistance, and maintaining the smooth, safe movement of traffic. The crossing guard will provide advance warning to motorists of intersections under their control. Both permanent and on-call positions are available. Permanent positions offer a starting wage of $20.67 per hour and are eligible for pension and medical benefits, while on-call positions pay $20.57 per hour and do not include benefits.

Requirements

Ability to act as a representative of the Sheriff’s Office to the public.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff.
Successfully communicate with other staff members and members of the public and work as a team.
Ability to respond properly in emergency situations and complete assignments under pressure.
Ability to communicate effectively; to read, write and speak in a clear, articulate manner.
Ability to utilize the senses of sight, hearing, smell and feel to recognize conditions of danger and other factors.
Ability to adapt to changes in working conditions such as inclement weather, heavy pedestrian or traffic flows or last minute schedule changes.
Ability to stand for extended periods of time under all conditions while maintaining mental alertness.
Ability to use tact and resourcefulness in coping with varied problems and situations.
Ability to interact effectively and responsibly with persons of cultural, ethnic, religious and economic backgrounds.
Ability to work unsupervised.
Knowledge of uniform traffic control hand signals, basic first aid, pedestrian control techniques and Sheriff’s Office rules and regulations.
Must possess a high school diploma or GED certificate recognized by the Maryland State Board of Education.
Must have a valid driver's license with no more than 3 points and a relatively clean record with no convictions for DUI.
Must pass comprehensive background investigation and criminal record check; medical exam and drug/alcohol screening; polygraph exam.
Must provide handwriting sample for review.
Must appear before and receive favorable recommendation from Oral Interview Board.
Must possess a history and exhibit the characteristics of honesty, reliability, integrity and interpersonal skills.
Any criminal conviction(s) and/or arrest(s) may be grounds for disqualification.

Responsibilities

Stop vehicular traffic to allow for safe pedestrian passage at designated school crossing locations.
Place warning devices at traffic control points.
Render basic first aid to injured persons as needed.
Maintain orderly control of pedestrians at crossings.
Report hazardous conditions at traffic control points.
Attend meetings and required training programs.
Perform other duties as assigned.
